FA Youth Cup 2014-15

Who's been sent off and what for?

I switch this on earlier only to find that my Chelsea subscription ended today after I decided I don't watch it enough to warrant paying for it - gutted!

Chelsea ended up winning the game 2-0 against Leeds United.

Chelsea youth team goalkeeper Bradley Collins was sent off in the first minute of the second half. He was shown a straight red card when he went out of his area and committed foul on Robbie McDaid who was bearing down on the Chelsea goal.

Not the most convincing performance and Leeds got away with a lot of stuff. Was a really niggly game at times, very Leeds-Chelsea in that regard.

Looks like a lot more turnover in playing personnel compared to recent seasons but some really bright talents. Clarke-Salter at the back has pace and composure, Solanke, Colkett, Brown, Aina and Da Silva are still around and Tammy Abraham is a bit of a beast at this level. Won our penalty with a strong run down the right before being scythed down.

What was most impressive was how we coped with the sending off. It was a proper Jose-type performance where we just defended superbly and broke to put Solanke through for the second goal. Onwards and upwards.

Was an enjoyable game to watch and as Blue Daze says, it was very Chelsea v Leeds with plenty of niggle.

Have to say though, this current youth team doesn't look to have the same sort of quality as we have had in recent seasons. Still some decent players and I know Boga was missing last night, but no real quality like we have seen over the past few seasons. Be great if we could have another run in the Youth Cup but I can't see it to be honest.

Won again last night so through to the next round. It was embarrassingly easy, a 6-1 win over Huddersfield and the gulf in class was all too evident.

Our defence and keeper still look iffy and they will struggle when faced with better opposition. But going forward we have so many options. Last night Abraham scored 2 and Solanke got a hat-trick, but there were many decent performances. We will now play Swansea or Doncaster at home in the next round.

I seemed to have missed a round some how?!!

We had another easy win in the 5th round over Swansea 6-0 but 6th round is tonight and away to Newcastle which will be tough. Think I'll watch that tonight and just flick over now and again to cheer on Preston.

0 - 0 Chelsea with all the possession, missed a penalty by Isiaah Brown, Dasilvac, Colkett & Ola Aina pick of the bunch first half.

Tammy Abrahams to change his boots at H/T for his shooting boots & Solanke to look for a pass instead of trying to dribble pass the whole M/F & Defence.

Newcastle 0 - 3 Chelsea

Really made hard work of this tie, Isi Brown in first half of extra time, Dominic Solanke & Tammy Abrahams with the goals in 2nd half of extra time.

Class told finally in the end.

Really don't think this team is as good we recent years but through to the semis again is a fantastic result. Newcastle have been a tricky side in recent years too.

Have to agree with that. That said, Boga has been injured and I think we'll need him back for the semi final as he does have that extra ability to produce something that can win a game.

Thought we totally outplayed Newcastle but all the time it remained 0-0 it looked like one of those games we could lose and they came very close to nicking it in normal time. Still, another semi final and the youth team marches on..............!

I think it just shows how good the likes of Loftus-Cheek and Ake really are. Seem to be missing that little bit of extra class although I think it's a younger team than recent years as well. Boga was the difference against Newcastle last year if I remember correctly but he seems to keep picking up injuries.

Completely disagree with both of you. This current squad of players, even without an injured Boga [exceptional talent] has all the makings of being the best we have had from the Academy so far. My reasons for saying so? Well, starting with the defence:-

Ola Aina and Jay Dasilva are the most technically gifted full-back pairing I’ve seen at this level in a long while, comfortable on the ball both defensively and going forward, with both of them having the confidence and ability to take players on. Then there is Jake-Salter Clarke, a central defender who looks almost as accomplished as Andreas Christensen was at a similar stage in his development, and [in the game] just when I thought his substitution might cost us dear, on came Ali Sulic [first time I’d seen him] to play the proverbial ’blinder’… he didn’t put a foot wrong.

In midfield we had captain Charlie Colkett -of whom much is expected and rightly so - played the base of a diamond last night, spraying the passes around, together with that box of tricks called Charly Musonda, who has already had an appreciative thread all to himself on here. However, in my humble opinion, another midfielder, Kyle Scott, might end up being an even better prospect than any of them - reminds me of Luka Modric, the way he glides with the ball and threads it through to the strikers. As you may have guessed, I just love watching the way this lad plays the game.

Then [at the tip of the diamond against Newcastle, but ostensibly an out-an-out striker] we have Dominic Solanke, playing in behind Tammy Abraham and Izzy Brown and if ever there was such a thing as an embarrassment of riches attacking-wise this is it!! Seriously, are we really saying these boys are not as good as in previous years? Okay, we might remain unconvinced about them all making the grade with us, but, even if we have doubts individually, the group as a whole has to be exceptional. And, should you still be unsure, just cast an appreciative eye over Kasey Palmer, who came on in the second half, a player who has scored a hatful of spectacular goals this season, yet still couldn't make the starting line-up in this crucial match.

Funny how we all see things differently Dorset!

All the players you have mentioned are indeed very good young players and maybe we have just become spoiled in recent seasons and have higher expectations all the time. I singled out Kyle Scott a while back and said I was very impressed with him and will look forward to see how he develops. But to me, they still don't look quite as good as the likes of Josh, Ake, Chalobah, Baker, Swift etc did at that age.

The front 3 do look potent and it's fitting that all 3 got on the score sheet last night (all 3 also missed a fair few decent chances but it would be harsh to over criticize them when they are developing and improving all the time).

As I've said a lot recently, I have stopped pinning too much hope on ANY of our youngsters making it at CFC but would be happy if at least one did. We shall wait and see.......................

Agree with that. I think DaSilva is a real gem and have been saying that for a while now, and I've always like Aina. Having said that we've had some decent defenders in recent years including Ake (probably the best we've had in recent history), Davey and Kane so it's not a massive leap in talent in my opinion.

This is where I disagree and where we're perhaps not as strong as we once were. Loftus-Cheek at youth level was an absolute beast. He controlled the game beautifully, he was a prodigious physical specimen and he was a proper leader. I like Colkett and Scott and even Houghton impressed me last season but I think the midfield is where we're lacking a bit this year.

Dom Solanke and Izzy Brown were both part of the setup last year and before that you had the likes of Islam Feruz, Lucas Piazon and Jeremie Boga spearheading our teams. We've been quite blessed in that department at youth level.

I think you've made some great points and it's always nice to celebrate our young players but in terms of teams, I still don't think this year's is quite at the level of previous years. That's not so much a slight on them as a recognition of just how good the likes of Loftus-Cheek, Ake,Christensen and Baker were.

But I think we certainly have some real gems in Solanke, possibly Abraham and DaSilva who reminds me so much of Ashley Cole.
