Harry Shearer to leave The Simpsons

Featured Replies

After voicing a huge number of Simpsons characters for over 25 years Harry Shearer is set to leave the show.

The Simpsons has just been green lit for a further two seasons its' 27th and 28th.

Just to give you an idea of how big of a loss this is to the show here's how many characters Shearer voices.

Supposedly this is due to a dispute over Shearer feeling that the show's producers do not allow him enough creative freedom outside of the show having since the original announcement saying in an interview with CNN

"In last four years, I've created and starred in a UK TV series and starred on London stage. Not stopping."

When asked whether he could still continue on the show, he answered: "I think that's a question better posed to them."

Could this be the beginning of the end of the longest running TV show in history?

I haven't properly watched the Simpsons in a long time but occasionally watch an episode if there's nothing else on. I used to watch it loads.

Sad if it comes to an end.

The show peaked quite a few years ago, I haven't seen a lot of the newer episodes but the quality is a lot worse.

I saw an episode with Lady Gaga in and it was honestly one of the worst things I have ever seen, definitely a low point for the Simpsons who were a truly funny and original programme.

Yeah around 5-10 years ago I watched it on Channel 4 at 6pm every day, then on Sky 1 later in the evening.

I didn't like the early ones but found the ones being released a few years ago really good.

Seasons 1-10 were brilliant. I was a Simpsons obsessive back in the day. I'll still watch the classic episodes on Sky 1.

Sad to hear Shearer is going! Mr Burns is one of the best characters.

First reaction when I heard this was, The Simpsons is still going?? I rarely watch it any more. It jumped the shark years ago. The more recent episodes I've seen are lower quality than those from the show's heyday.

I doubt him leaving will be a problem for them though. There's bound to be someone out there who can do an excellent Mr Burns impression.

Nuke the fridge is a newer version, is that right?

Apparently so but that one feels quite forced as a phrase if that makes sense, I don't think it will stick around in the same way that Jump The Shark has.

True.

Back on topic, the moment The Simpsons "jumped the shark" was the episode "The Principal and the Pauper" in season 9. The episode was total nonsense. Harry Shearer thought it was too, after reading the script.

I actually think Family Guy was the death of Simpsons as we knew it.

Family guy's popularity saw The Simpsons emulate more edgy and darker jokes but it wasn't really in-keeping with the where the show came from.

Perhaps. But only the first 5 seasons of Family Guy are any good anyway.

All hail Harry Shearer!

Mr Burns is the best character for me... along with Homer and Moe.

I didn't know that episode by name but after googling it, I remember it. I just didn't get it. Awful, irrelevant and unfunny episode.

I heard there was a Simpsons Movie 2 being thought about so that might not happen now.

If the first five seasons were supposed to be good, then it's a good thing I haven't bothered to watch it lately... :happy001:

Family Guy peaked in the middle for me. I watch three cartoon serious, IMO:

Simpsons was at its best in the beginning.

Family Guy was at its best between season 4-8

South Park gets better and better.

What about post-11840-0-08877500-1431623067_thumb.jpg

I can second Adventure Time.

Also, Bravest Warriors.

Here is a 5 second clip of Bravest Warriors. if after watching this you don't want to see more, then I can't help you.

I agree, Familly guy seasons 1-3 were brilliant, the humour back then was far better and was as good as The Simpsons was in it's early days . After returning from getting cancelled it was still really good until season 6. When season 6 arrived it just wasn't as funny anymore and i found the characters to be really annoying, especially Herbert and Quagmire. Family Guy relies on swear words for laughs these days, it's just a cheap way to make people laugh. Their writers are just not as good now. The Conway Twitty stuff is a perfect example of bad writing, they just put it in to waste time because they don't have any ideas. It's not funny or clever, it's annoying.

American Dad is the best of Seth MacFarlane's shows now in my opinion.

The Simpsons season 1-11 is brilliant, i think after the first 11 seasons it dips in quality but i still find it funny and it still has some great episodes.

South Park is awesome. Like you said, it get's better and better. Imaginationland and the episodes with Coon and friends is brilliant. Also, Butters is awesome.

This bit on Imaginationland always makes me laugh

I'm also a big fan of Futurama, it's a shame that it's been cancelled again.

Read Alan Shearer at first. For me The Simpsons has been rapidly declining for years now like others have said series 1-10 were brilliant. South Park is just streets ahead of family guy american dad ect.. They literally have no boundries. :laugh2:

Completely off topic but I love the origin of this phrase.

It's from an episode of Happy Days when the Fonz had to jump a shark while on water skis. It's when a show has run it's course and has to resort to either a rehash of old ideas or in this case a pointless stunt.

South Park is awesome. Like you said, it get's better and better. Imaginationland and the episodes with Coon and friends is brilliant. Also, Butters is awesome.

The Nightmare on FaceTime episode is probably one of the funniest cartoon episodes I've ever seen, genius.

I think The Simpsons at its peak was untouchable, there are so many classic episodes (Homie the Clown, Homer Badman, Marge vs The Monorail...). It's a shame how far it has fallen and now I couldn't care less what happens to it.

South Park is one of those rare shows that seems to get better with time. I think the humour has developed a lot from the crude scat jokes it used to rely on and it's now one of the best satirical shows on TV.

I'll add Side Show Bob to that best character list, but he's more of a guest star... Brother from another Series and Cape Feare are classics. Loved his first major episode too where he marries Selma; Black Widower too.

Top 5 Simpsons characters people? In no real order - Moe, Mr Burns, Homer, Side Show Bob & Edna K for me.
