Why are Chelsea fans so obsessed with Gerrard and his slip?

Featured Replies

Whatever the reasons he's spent over 20 years at one club, 11 as captain and that's a remarkable thing.

But to your point, is it that different from when JT flirted with Man City to secure the best contract at this club?

More unsubstantiated media smears. Unless you can prove me wrong. Did JT ever hand in a transfer request?

The etc. being the last minute equaliser v Wet Spam. Oh yes, the last minute winner v Olympiakos.

And, er, that's it, really. Apart from a few starfish dives.

The BBC are running Top Ten Gerrard moments on 5live this week, so I'll have to tune in to refresh my memory, which has been heavily influenced by the media obsession with two 3-3 draws and a narrow win in a CL group match, which happened a decade ago. We've had a few major tournaments since then in which he didn't show up.

I'm with you it's not much but for people to say things like he's been an average player are just ridiculous cause he clearly hasn't. He's been a top player, and yes there are others above him but he's clearly the media darling. Stuff like top ten moments are the norm for players however it's the vomit including media coverage of Liverpool's meaningless match with Crystal Palace or any match that is Gerrard's last something been overblown that's ridiculous.

No but he definitely had his agent sound them out. Now people might defend that as good practice in a contract negotiation and that's fair enough but when having a pop at Gerrard people might want to think about glass houses and such.

Honestly some of the comments are ridiculous. Scouser levels in some cases.

I'd say the key difference is that Gerrard tried to leave and Terry didn't, which is essentially the fundamental point.

Nope and when he was questioned about it he said that he didn't want to leave. I think it was clearly a media fabrication.

Man City wanted to buy him, and were prepared to break the transfer record to get him. That's not an agent 'sounding them out'. It's an agent answering their phone and doing their job.

We all know the rumours about why Gerrard didn't leave but he stayed and contributed to their success (and failures) going forward.

I'm just amazed that people can't recognise a great (not just above average) footballer even if he's an opponent. The level of vitriol is making me feel a little bit uneasy.

lol, cheers for the replies and trust me I am a Chelsea fan, I know its hard to believe but this was a genuine question. I hate Liverpool and Gerrard just as much but I don't take pleasure in it, just for pure banter. I didn't think this topic would pick up this much, just wanted fast replies, thats why I created an account here, it looked the most active of the Chelsea forums.

if you still don't believe me, I write poems after some of our matches, its all there, this question was asked there by an Arsenal fan and I wanted to ask it here.

Sorry if I did offend anyone, I think I worded the question wrong

Poetry? Rawk member confirmed.

That's not what I heard but we'll have to agree to disagree.

I don't hold it against JT though. I just find some of the things people criticise Gerrard for to show an amazing lack of self awareness.

Is JT's career all about him slipping in Moscow?

There are faults with him and the treatment he's getting in the media and from his own fans but he's been a great player and he'd have won the league title if he'd left Liverpool and joined us.

He didn't. That's rare nowadays. But some of the comments on here are getting ridiculous and I'm proud the tribute from the supporters in the ground was classier.

Get over your self for f**ks sake, football is territorial and tribal, its a chance to laugh at a rival who is dry bummed constantly by the likes of sky, talksport and other media outlets. Bringing class into it is so boring, scouser levels of boring

It's not vitriol in my case. It's trying to put things into perspective, given the grotesque media distortion of reality through Scouse-tinted spectacles. Yes, he's had a great career, but he's being portrayed as some Messianic superman, which is farcical. There are plenty of better players than him who haven't had a fraction of the glorification being given to Gerrard.

Trying too hard...

I actually agree with this

I think some elements of the media have gone that way, others have been fairer.

Combating one hysterical reaction with another is not exactly the way I'd go but whatever keeps people happy.

Ultimately he's been a great opponent for us over the last decade, we've won more often than not and I'd have loved him to sign for us.

But football is made by the players and he's given me some great memories. That's why he was applauded by the supporters last week.

As I elaborated on in previous pages my lack of "recognition" of Gerrard has nothing to do with my personal dislike of him, it's because I was able to think of 13 better players in his same position in his same generation within about 30 seconds.

So, being at best the 14th best player in his position over the last 15 years, I merely wonder what he has done to justify this media circus and even worse, the rewriting of history in the media (that you seem to have fallen for) that he was some great player when in reality he was a big fish in a small pond who had one legendary half (not even a full game, just a second half).

You either haven't read the many posts in other threads, or you can't read very well, that you still need to ask how many Chelsea supporters feel on the subject :-)

In a nutshell

- Gerrard's been a top player not average, but some better players haven't gotten the recognition that he has so some people feel the need to say he's been average.

- We hate him for various reasons, i.e. He didn't sign for us, he's a w**ker and the media love him to the point of nausea.

- He had some great club moments but not as many as some other players and probably not the same amount as he could have had if he'd signed for us.

- His leaving of Liverpool has been overhyped by Sky and anyone in the media, infact it's sickening and no one player is really deserving of this hype train.

There can we leave it now?

And I think I'd disagree with half of them whilst someone like Maka was a completely different type of midfielder.

Has Jose fallen for the media as well? He tried to sign him a few times, once when he was here. Remember that? Did the Chelsea fans talking him up then fall for the media spin?

The reason it's been hyped it's because Sky want people to watch their channels and there's not really any other reason to. The league title is sorted as is the champions league. He's the biggest story in town.

Regardless it's nauseating to a lot of us and it's pissing people off. Rightly so in my opinion aswell. Also it doesn't matter why they're doing it the point I made is still valid.

Also it's been going on since he announced it, title was nowhere near wrapped up when they were advertising the crap out of the Merseyside derby with Gerrard as the poster boy with quotes like his last derby etc.

Because it got viewers. Wonder how many people moaning will tune in tonight, if just so they can moan some more.

Amazing they can't just ignore it.

The thing is that I'm not saying people shouldn't give him stick, but it's the inability to give him some credit too. It happened at the bridge last week.

There's nothing wrong with promoting it but it's how over the top it is. Again it's not relevant to my point anyway. Seems to me you're just picking an argument out of what I said?

People have the right to give player stock I agree but I also agree that some people are using their hatred as a reason for saying things like he's average etc.
