Why are Chelsea fans so obsessed with Gerrard and his slip?

Featured Replies

So because he's watching it on TV you're throwing the your not a real fan label at him? Well done you've just acended to complete twat ::clap2::

Actually I was pointing out that he might see grown men at the parade getting emotional, like Phil Thompson.

DKW doesn't seem to understand what grown men feel at sporting events. It's like explaining love to Sheldon Cooper.

JT didn't though. He got himself sent off in the semis.

That's the point though. He's a great player who isn't defined by his errors.

So he didn't win it? Because he didn't play in the final? He didn't score against Napoli did he? He make interceptions/tackles in the earlier rounds etc.

He isn't wholly defined but he is defined by that slip moment and it will always be a stigma surrounding him.

So why say enjoy the parade on TV?  Sounded like you were implying something there to me?

Held a deep (and unhealthy) dislike for Gerrard for many years (the same with Henry), but as these types of players reach the end of their careers, and they begin to fade away, you lose the hostility towards them because they are no longer that force or threat they once were.

Many won't agree, but in club Football certainly, I think at one point Gerrard was probably one of the best midfielders, if not the best, in terms of an all-round game.

Strongly dislike Gerrard still, but I understand perfectly the fans rising to applaud him the other day.

(BTW, people, I'm sure there are plenty of things worthier of falling out over on a Chelsea forum than a Liverpool player - and Steven Gerrard at that!)

So JT is defined by Moscow? See I'd disagree with that and suggest the person saying that knew nothing about football.

-4 BPL titles which were won in such fashion that they include the following records: fewest goals ever conceded in a BPL season, most points ever accumulated in a BPL season, most goals scored in a BPL season, and longest time top of the table in a BPL season.

- Close to being one of a very few players to play every minute of a BPL season while winning the title, at 34 years of age

- record holder for most goals from a defender in BPL history, beating out a guy whose tally included 20 or so penalties

- while perhaps not widely accepted as being the best at his position in BPL history, it's not that hard to defend that position when speaking of Terry (albiet same with a few others)... especially in comparison with trying to take the same stance with Gerrard

I'd wager to say that outside of their own club fanbases where they are both club legends (well, loosely put anyways ), Terry has done quite a bit more to define his career and leave a legacy.

I second that, falling out over a Liverpool player isn't worth it.

They do but the mistakes he's made have been hugely influential or highly memorable and it's not that often that happens so often to one player

- Euro 2004 poor pass back led to France scoring a late pen and betting England

- League Cup Final Gerrard own goal makes it 1-1 allowing eventual winners Chelsea back into the game*

- Prem 05/06 pass back to Henry, late goal and winner for Arsenal

- Prem 09/10 pass back to Drogba completely destroys Liverpool's top four hopes and helps Chelsea go on to win the Premier League*

- Prem 13/14 his slip let's Demba Ba score the goal that pretty much destroys Liverpool's title challenge*

- To many sending offs to count

Have I missed any?

Not all of those are massively remembered but three* of them are really well remembered

pass back to goalkeeper...gudjohnson latches on to it and scores..99/00 i think it was

last years world cup...against Uruguay.

Don't like Gerrard as a person, but think he is a Premier League great.

Pity some on this forum can't be magnanimous just for a day.

one of  the greats yes...but the media are placing him as the greatest and that is no way the truth

We all know the rumours about why Gerrard didn't leave but he stayed and contributed to their success (and failures) going forward.

I'm just amazed that people can't recognise a great (not just above average) footballer even if he's an opponent. The level of vitriol is making me feel a little bit uneasy.

Bullsh*t.  He never was a great player, apart for Chelsea no-one else made an approach for him.  Vitriol is how I felt after Fowler opened his arse cheeks in front of Le Saux, grow some balls for f**ks sake,

The best players in the world make mistakes.

You can't be serious here? He f**ked up so many opportunities for his club, don't just drop that in the same basket as "the best players in the world make mistakes" he is a massive bottler.

I hate a great deal of many players but it never changes my opinion of them.

Gerrard is and always has been overrated, not saying he wasn't a good player because he was but he has always been put in the same bracket as the likes of Xavi and Scholes when he has been nowhere near those. He is the most overrated technical player you'll find, he never even matched the same intelligence on the pitch to be shared in that bracket.

Also Lampard is and always has been better.
