The result against Brazil showed how they could play but unfortunately a bit too late. The escapade with Bud didn't help.

The media helped wind up the hype, yet were quick to turn when it went wrong. Can’t remember many in the media warning that it wasn’t going to be as easy as was being widely predicted. Some players simply under performed in that tournament for Scotland. Danny McGrain being unavailable and Gordon McQueen being injured v Wales didn’t help. Yet Andy Gray stayed at home and Derek Johnstone never got on the pitch. This despite him having scored both Scotland’s goals in the preceding Home Internationals! I should have typed Netherlands rather than Brazil. I must have been thinking of the 1974 World Cup. McGrain and McQueen were great defenders. Daft not taking Andy Gray. Always did a good job for the clubs he played for. As for DJ, a strange one given that he could play striker and defender.

Remember as a kid my Simon Inglis book of football grounds, obviously had pictures of the grounds and ibrox was always the best picture as it was in colour and had the three new stands, a lot of the other pictures were black and white and as it was late 70s early 80’s so most of the grounds were old ramshackle affairs, obviously my favourite picture was though the East stand at the bridge!
