FFS, I saw the title of this thread and I thought he had died! Don't do this every again

Oh and good luck Christian

Good luck to him. Based on what I've seen, and bearing in mind the number of wingers we have on our books, I'm not convinced he'll ever make it at Chelsea, but I hope he has a good career elsewhere.

Newcastle have taken up their option to buy Atsu for £6m...not bad business since we bought him from Porto for only £3.5m in 2013.

Good luck to the lad.

£3m profit in the sale, but factor in his wages for 4 years and we probably made a loss.

Maybe not as he was on loan for those years and his wages may have been partially or fully paid by the loan club...

I would honestly doubt most clubs pay much of a contribution toward our players when we loan them out.

Wrong. Unless it's a kid no-one has ever heard of being loaned to Dover or the handful farmed out to Vitesse, most pay a large chunk if not most of the wages.

It wouldn't be very profitable to have 40 players out on loan if we were paying their salaries

The accountant in me had to do the sums, sorry ;)

So we signed him in 2013 for £3.5m on a 5 year deal. His carrying value on our balance sheet before he left would be £0.7m, assuming the rest has been amortised straight line over his contract. Technically then we made an accounting profit on disposal of £5.3m in this year's books. Might seem a technicality, but the way this works means that what looks like a pointless transfer can in reality prove to boost our accounts considerably.

Of course the amortisation charge and wages were an expense in the other years' accounts, so in total terms the situation would be:

Amortisation- £2.8m

4 years of wages- £2.0-£3.0m (nowhere really had a certain figure, but based on Google and a few Newcastle blogs they had him down as £10k per week/£0.5m per year. Seems a bit low to me, but I'm also assuming that we covered this and Newcastle didn't contribute)

Meaning that in cash terms we quite possibly made a small surplus.

I am sure that Newcaste and Everton will have paid a very reasonable portion of Atsu's wages, It is only really the Bournemouth loan were I can see it being at a much reduced cost (although i still imagine they will have paid at least a third of his wages), as this was his shot to prove he could make it in the BPL and massively increase his transfer value.

Our loan army is seemingly a business model for the club and I can't imagine we won't be pinching every penny we can get in wage contributions, there is a reason we seemingly use countries like Turkey for players which can't attract paying loans in more prestigious leagues.
