Posted October 27, 200717 yr Our attack so far this season can only be described as 'blunt' ! Without Drogba and Lampard we looked like Hereford Utd. These are the players were relying on to make up our attack when Drogba and Lampard are out..... 7 Andriy Shevchenko 9 Steven Sidwell 10 Joe Cole 14 Claudio Pizarro 15 Florent Malouda 17 Scott Sinclair 21 Salomon Kalou 24 Shaun Wright-Phillips Joe Cole & maybe SWP aside, where are we going with this lot ?
October 27, 200717 yr I agree, our defence is one of the, if not THE best in the world. I don't think our attack even makes it in the top 3 however. On paper it sounds good, think back two years ago and imagine Cole Ballack Lampard Malouda Sheva Drogba Sounded like a dream team back then no? Just didn't quite work out that way
October 27, 200717 yr Author What happened to Sinclair? He's still with us, right? Why not use him more? Yeah Sinclair is very handy indeed, but where on that list is the creativity going to come from ? Who are going to be our goal poachers without Drogba and Lampard ? We need a Crespo to partner Drogba, we also need creativity in midfield, of which at present we have VERY little of !
October 27, 200717 yr I think selecting Kalou ahead of Malouda really worked well for Chelsea today That wasn't Grant. That was Mourinho's doing (Dripping with sarcasm)
October 27, 200717 yr When Sheva came on for Joe Cole, I thought "why didn't he take Kalou off instead?" Which shows how much I know.
October 28, 200717 yr I think selecting Kalou ahead of Malouda really worked well for Chelsea today That wasn't Grant. That was Mourinho's doing (Dripping with sarcasm) *blink*
October 29, 200717 yr Without Drogba and Lampard we looked like Hereford Utd. Spot on. What'll we look like without them next year if they leave?
October 29, 200717 yr Without Drogba and Lampard we looked like Hereford Utd. Spot on. What'll we look like without them next year if they leave? I knew we could rely on you Bluenut to find the down side following a 6-0 win!!! Any good things to say about Grant yet?

I knew we could rely on you Bluenut to find the down side following a 6-0 win!!! Any good things to say about Grant yet? Wasn't looking for a down-side. Couldn't really find fault with the performance on Saturday. Best performance of the season against a side who came to play football, not just park the bus. Drogba and Lamps were head and shoulders above any other players on the pitch, lets hope we can persuede them to stay. It's nice to have them back, firing on all cylinders. (on the negative side though - I hope it's not just to put themselve's in the shop-window )
October 29, 200717 yr Bluenut mate, have you been blagging some of Callista's pessimism pills? I think I know where you're coming from , but not a couple of days after THAT match! Keep the faith mate Kev (PS - all meant in the nicest possible way!)
October 29, 200717 yr No offence taken mate. AND I'm not trying to put a negative slant on anything. Just making a point to those who reckon it doesn't matter if they both leave in the summer. I reckon they're the heartbeat of the side, along with JT and we've should do everything we can to hold onto them.
October 29, 200717 yr Just making a point to those who reckon it doesn't matter if they both leave in the summer. I reckon they're the heartbeat of the side, along with JT and we've should do everything we can to hold onto them. Amen to that! I got annoyed with Didier when he gobbed off to the French media however that doesn't mean I don't realise the impact Didier leaving would have on us. Anyone who thinks that losing Didier and Frank wouldn't be a massive blow is clearly gone a little David Icke!
October 29, 200717 yr No argument there - it would be a massive blow to lose both of them - especially if they both left at the same time - it really mustn't happen. But if we do lose both, we will have to learn to adapt. This is where the club should have some kind of contingency programme in place so we are prepared for such eventualities. Just like Arsenal have done in losing Vierra, Henry, Bergkamp etc etc and yet they are still playing football that some would argue is better than ever. Hopefully the usefulness of the likes of Frank Arneson will become apparent or of course Roman will need to get the cheque book out big time!!

I read some where that this is a lesson he learnt from the demise of liverpool.. his assitant at the time had pointed out that the scousers had allowed all the stars to get old together and any season soon things were going to go pete tong.... 17 years later still paying the price
October 30, 200717 yr Author I started this thread before Saturdays romp at the Bridge. But it only just goes to strengthen my argument that our attack is nowhere near the mark without Drogba and Lampard. Lets hope that these 2 go on and have great seasons, only then will the powers up top realise how crap we are without them.
October 31, 200717 yr I really hope the way Sheva took the last goal in the man citeh game shows what he is best at; being a predator, and running of the last defender. If we can play more attacking, to the point sheva isn't waasting pace and energy by dropping back into the midfield so muc, then I think he will be fine while Drogs is gone.
October 31, 200717 yr ...relies on Drogba and Lamps. BTW who posted somewhere in this forum that Essien doesn't fit in our midfield. 1goal and 2assists in ManCity game. He is just one of the best, lets say, two way players in the world. Sometimes clumsy, but has lot more finesse than in his first year with Chelsea. Key player in our midfield. Who would you replace him with? When he plays right side of the midfield and has an attacking role he is just great. Back to the original topic: Sidwell needs to play more before we can judge him, lets hope he plays tonight in CC-game. Kalou has scored 4 times this season so he is doing okay, but his decisions inside the box are just wrong 9 out of 10 times. Malouda is good IMO, he should shoot more. He is really good at defending as well. SWP is too one dimensional, but has been in best form with us this season. In good form against right kind of opponent and he will do damage. Paolo has been good in going forward, hope to see more of that. Sheva, Pizarro: score goals!
October 31, 200717 yr Kalou has scored 4 times this season so he is doing okay, but his decisions inside the box are just wrong 9 out of 10 times. Imagine a Kalou with the scoring abilities of Drogba Top scorer for sure

October 31, 200717 yr The problem is if we loose Drogba it will be hard to find a player that can play alone in that position, we would have to play 442 unless we can replace him with someone that can play alone upfront, someone like Toni would work i think.

Well its been almost 4 months since my post ^ above, nothing much has changed. SWP and Joe Cole have still got no form whatsoever. Even with Dorgba & Lampard back and Anelka added, things still look blunt in attack. I just cant believe we are STILL so meaningless in attack.
February 26, 200817 yr Bit harsh on Joe Cole is it not ? But yeah our attacking situation is depressing
