Both sides are playing the game, and quite frankly (ha!) if Frank is wanting x amount over a 5 year contract then the club are playing it correctly by not giving into such ridiculous demands.

To be fair though, they're not even back up players, they're back up players to back up players and so far (or were anyway) down the list that they're almost irrelevant. I'd even argue they're taking up squad places of younger players who could come in, like for instance Di Santo who you mentioned and Mancienne who I think is more than capable of now getting a squad place. Ironically those three players who we bought purely for squad back up (Sidwell, Ben Haim and Pizzarro) could probably trim the squad down to the right size just by getting rid of them.

So you want Ben Haim, Pizarro and the like to stay? According to Bruce Buck we want a squad of 22 outfield players and 3 goalkeepers. At the moment we have a squad of 25 outfield players (I think) and three goalkeepers so we need to get rid of at least 3 players. Ben Haim, Pizarro and Sidwell are guarantees in my opinion, then the next batch include players like Drogba, Lampard, SWP, Makelele etc. Take into account players we'll promote (Di Santo will get a squad place, Sinclair, Mancienne etc may still do) and players we'll buy and the departure list could balance out quite nicely with the players in. A smaller squad but with much more quality. Hopefully.

To see one of the best players in the world in his prime playing for us would more than make up for Lampard leaving. That being said, the chance is so remote it's almost worth not discussing.

Realistically £8-10 million for SWP and around £20 million for Drogba (and even then I think that is an optimistic price) bearing in mind age, length of contract etc.
