To be fair, Torres very nearly scored with one of the front post corners, but I agree, Oscar's dead ball striking has been pretty damn poor. Ivanovic is as good as it gets at winning the ball in the air, got to find him.

Schwarzer 6 Quiet game, safe performance. Distribution not great. Apiculieta 6 Got forward well and defending was fine. Conned into a yellow card by a awful dive. Bertrand 7 Lively going forward and never looked troubled in defence. Cahill 6 Straight forward performance. Solid. Luiz 5 Very odd performance. At times acted as if he was undermining the opponents. Pretty dodgy game all round. Van Ginkel N/A Gutted. He desperately wanted to stay on but it's obvious to everyone that it was a nasty buckle. Hope he's not out long. Essien 8 MOTM. Protected the back 4 and surged forward when space opened up. Deserves more games. Mata 5 Looked so desperate to work hard that he forgot to play football, far from his usual sublime self. De Bruyne 5 Generally pretty poor. Passing was off and control was sloppy to. Missed a great chance. Torres 7 Obviously good to see him score and a great assist. Should have scored another 1/2. Workrate was top notch. William 5 Looked nervous throughout and didn't really take anyone on. Didn't do much wrong, but didn't do much right either. Nothing performance. Subs: Ramires 6 Passing was consistently inconsistent, as usual but his pace is so important to the team. Incredible speed for his goal. Ba 5 Didn't really have time to do much, 1 decent shot but not much else. Didn't want him on, 10 mins to go = bring Baker on surely?! Fantastic talent. Terry 6 Very solid, never phased. Downside was that it pushed Luiz into midfield, where he was very poor. Hate the obsession that Luiz is a midfielder. He's not.

Essien all the way. Those surging runs through the middle are quite simply pornography. Torres seems to have found his level Good performance and excellent work rate, exaggerated by many though.

Pretty solid performance, never really got going but at the same time never looked in any danger. I don't think any of the attacking trio from tonight will start against spuds. José's preference tends to be Oscar, Hazard and Schuerrle. Thought Essien was very good, Torres also good - should probably have scored another. Dave showed a bit of pace on the wing that Branna doesn't give us, but takes away a lot of defensive quality. I usually stand up for Luiz when he makes mistakes but that backheel... indefensible. Lucky boy. All in all, very very solid. Nothing special but nothing to worry about.

My 1st thought when I saw this thread was Inglorious Basterds. Waltz's performance is one of the best I've seen in any film, gripping and hilarious at the same time.

Instantly thought it was nepotism when I saw Essien is captain, but looking through the team, there don't seem to be many other options for it... Come on you blues! 4-1 IMO.

Should be don't ask don't tell in my opinion. I have nothing against gay people at all (apart from adoption, but that's a completely different topic) , but a footballer coming out has absolutely no upside. As has already been said, they would be harassed by opposition fans and hacks would put them on the back page every week. This seems like a flawed campaign all the way through. If Joey Barton is a part of it, it's probably not a good idea...

Todd is an unbelievably good character. If you missed an episode down the line somewhere, you could be fooled into thinking he's a nice and caring chap. His shenanigans in that episode though... wow.

1-Mikel 2-Oscar 3-Ivanovic Everyone else was ok, no particularly bad performances. Torres' 30 mins were no different to the usual... Also good to see Cole have a solid game after two absolute mares against Everton & Basel.
