Lofty's Wall of Sound - What are you listening to?

Featured Replies

This isn't accompanied by a clip but I am giving Bowie: A Reality Tour, a listen atm. It's from his last tour he did in 2003 but was only released last year. Some of the versions on the album are phenomenal. If you're a Bowie fan I promise you won't be disappointed.

I was thinking the other day that most music acts are better in the studio than they are live. Most sound ragged and unfinished on a

stage. I've seen the Stones and The Who, for example, and didn't much care for them.

But I could think of two musicians I'd rather see live: Joe Cocker and Janis Joplin. They didn't rely on studio tricks to sound good. They brought soul and emotion to their performances and that works best in a live environment, not a studio.

Will have to disagree with you on one of those points wwax.

I've seen The Who and the Stone live in the last 5 years, and I'd say they were still easily better than most of the modern acts I've seen, with perhaps the exception of Muse in 2007 or 08 (can't remember right now) who were quite phenomenal (and I wouldn't call myself a Muse fan) Of course I'm not old enough to have seen either in their prime, and I think it depends on the performance, but something like 'Get Yer Ya Ya's Out' or 'A Brussels Affair' are as good as music gets IMO.

I think most bands are much looser on stage. But that's part of the fun. To see a genuine artist like Mick Taylor or Pete Townsend depart from the script and just give you something different from a song you've listened to death, is just something else. Particularly the guys who give a much more earthy blues sound to their music. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if you get a good audience and a sober(ish) set of performers a live set can be really something special.

EDIT: Sorry should have provided a clip. Listen to Mick's, Taylor and Jagger as well as Keith go on this one.

Can't argue with that. You're right.

When I go see an artist or a band perform live, I don't want them to mimic the record, even if they could do it. Don't get me wrong, I want them to sound good, but I want to see and hear something that I couldn't experience by listening to the record. Some bands sound looser, more energetic and/or rough(in a good way) when they play live and there are many bands whose albums are ok, but they're absolutely fantastic live.

Some bands sound too rigid and subdued on their albums and the sounds are too polished on some artists' records. For certain genres the polished sound world works, but when I listen to a proper rock/punk/etc. record, it needs to sound a bit rough and dangerous, if you know what I mean.

So I gonna post a few songs that are Belgian memories in the nightlife...
