I'm listening to "Highball With the Devil" by Les Claypool and the Holy Mackerel because of this post in another thread:

But if I had my druthers (quaint old English expression, Maks)...

That reminded me of the song "Granny's Little Yard Gnome" from that album. I just popped it into my CD-player after reading that post in another thread and I'm listening to it as I type:

"...suppressing any urge to roam

such devotion from a little gnome

I once saw a calico that thought that he could fly

and then the lanky Doberman that tinkled in my eye

a pacifist by nature, with amble common sense

but if I had my druthers, I'd druther be a fence..."

I love cross-referencing! Ans so pleased you'd heard the expression before. These lovely old expressions should not be allowed to wither.

I met Nigel Clark from Dodgy yesterday on the train on the way back from the game. He's an all round good guy and enjoyed drinking with us and telling us a few stories, he was in London to do some recording for Radio 2. Also as he's a Birmingham fan he had been along to the Den to watch blues hammer Millwall  . He was even happy enough to finish off the journey by playing half a dozen songs for us to sing along too.
