lets face it.............we haven't got a proper backup to petr have we

hilario can be decent shot stopper but his overall game is a bit of a circus isn't it - kicking all over the place, saves are hit & miss

turnbull has some good PL experience but in all honesty he ain't good enuf is he

so its a cockup and the management are responsible

last time we were in this state we lost the PL so lessons shouldve been learned

its not as if we can't afford the wages is it

Back up for goalkeepers is always a tricky position though, its not like we are the only team that struggles with this. Look at Arsenal with Fabianski, or United with Foster or Kusack both of whom i do not rate highly. In Hilario we do not have a great goalkeeper but we have a player who can come in and for the most part do a respectable job. Don't forget that on his debut for the club he kept a clean sheet against none other than Barcelona, and also this season he managed to keep a clean sheet against liverpool. As far as backup keepers go we are not doing all that bad are we?

I've never seen anything from Henrique that says he is a great keeper but I've never dreaded having to use him either..I think he has been solid and was unlucky this time to have come into a massively important game with the team espesially defensively at sixes and sevens,

If he had come in a few weeks ago before Cech started showing a bit of his old form he might have got a decent bit of first team action before that game and been a lot better..

I doubt many teams other than us before this season could boast better back up.

He was only supposed to be 3rd choice and I expect the idea was to have Turnbull take over no 2 but that just never panned out.

I think we could do with no 2 keeper for next season and expect him to go in the summer but hes been decent back up really and he deserves his chance.

Says it all for me. Hilario is decent back-up, he just had a bad day on Saturday

Yeah I think the same thing. I remember the game against Liverpool last year. He did a great job and made a saved a great free kick. I'll have to see him in saturday's game to make a clear conclusion on how good/bad he really is right now.

Yup, he was fantastic the last time he filled in.

It seems like we were all out of sorts last weekend, so I am waiting to see how Hilario performs when we actually have a solid game in front of him.

I don't think either Hilario or Turnbull are good enough as back up. Just wondered if anyone who watches the ressies or youth team on a regular basis could give an opinion on how Rhys Taylor is shaping up? I know he's Welsh, but so was Eddie! :D

havent we got some really talented croation called Matej Delac coming to join us soon?

True, but he hasn't joined yet, 2011 I think. We've got young Sebek as well, who by all reports is one of the next big things of European goalkeepers as well. He's already 6'6, so you'd think he'd be ok in the air. Not that I've seen him in action, maybe a regular watcher of the reserves can comment on that.

Just on Hilario, he has always been decent backup. He just won his first cap for Portugal yesterday, did well when called in against Liverpool not to mention against Barca all those years ago when everyone thought they would destroy him. Noone decent is going to come to sit on the bench. How we managed to keep Carlo there for as long as we did defies belief. So for me the returns are far better if the money is spent elsewhere.

Last time Hilario came in for Cech, he had a dodgey first game then got better and in fact some were saying he could replace cech by the time he came back.

so think this thread is very harsh, think he is a okay back up and has remained fairly loyal to the club thus far.

Have to agree with this. Hilario isn't world class, but he has been up for the job in hand whenever asked. He doesn't moan about lack of playtime and have been very loyal uptil now.

I think a lot of this is just a reaction to the City game, where let's be honest he had a pretty terrible game.

He also had a bit of a nightmare in the Carling Cup game against Blackburn as well to be fair... but he can do a great job for us at times, made some very decent saves against Liverpool earlier in the season, and as loz said his debut against Barcelona was awesome

Last Saturday was a game that Citeh should not have won. They were very very very lucky boys that we had all this crap which I think summited last weeekend and subsequently will now recede into nothing.

I expect a blinding performance from the team this weekend, especially from JT. I think the gradual forgiving England crowd would have done him a lot of good, so would have a lot of high fives and hugs from the England players.

I think the players deep down know how it is being a footballer in England, It was a moment of weakness on JT's side and it just so happened to be with a mates ex. Tevez is just an inbred twerp with little no education and Bellemy............no need to say anything, everyone knows exaxtly what he is.

I think Henrique is a great keeper, He just had a bad game !

Who knows what will happen when Romans chequebook re-surfaces, but if its another GK to add to the list why not Hugo Lloris? and then ship Hilario(us) and/or Turnbull out.

See I don't see why people don't get that top class keepers don't come to sit on the bench. Lloris is playing first team football with Lyon in the Champions League and is a good shot at being French keeper come World Cup time. Why would he come to fill in for Petr when he's injured?

Hilario is a backup keeper who has just won a national cap. He has also kept well when called upon, apart from the last match against Man City. Furthermore as others have mentioned he has been loyal to the club for a number of years now, and has never complained about a lack of game time. As far as I'm concerned he is a perfect back up keeper and is entitled to one poor display on a day in which to be fair plenty of his teammates had bad days as well.

Let's not forget not so long ago, many on here were questioning whether we needed to replace Petr. I wonder how many of those individuals were still saying that after his displays in the weeks before he was injured. Same story here IMO, too many jumping the gun.

Somehow I never believed that.

Turnbull is frightening. And by frightening I mean terrible.

A point I have made time and time again. The idea of someone like Lloris signing is preposterous. It would only happen if he had a statutory obligation to put the food on the table of 6,000 starving orphans on a daily basis and therefore had to accept a higher wage to make ends meet!

Take a look around

Man Utd - Foster

Liverpool - go on name him, who plays if Reina doesn't? Diego Cavalieri?

Arsenal - Fabianski

Real Madrid - Dudek

Barcelona - Pinto

Inter - Toldo

etc etc

Of those only INter can maybe claim their back up keeper has pedigree and he is nearly 40. He is ther equivalent of what Cudicini would have been for us if we had held onto him.

Good post. I agree completely

As others have said, every club will have problems with back up keepers. But to be fair to Hilario it must be difficult to not play for so long and then n´be called upon, and i guess if he starts matches for a couple of weeks his form will improve.
