MKBlue Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) Nailing my colours to the mast right from the off on this one. Yes he's a legend. I'm not even gonna listen to the negative stuff about the man who is far and away the best centre forward I've seen in my time, honourable mentions for the King and Kerry, watching Chelsea. He also appears to be the leader of the team on the pitch at the moment, and I think (hope) that in a few seasons time we'll see Didi retiring as the grand old man of a new great Chelsea team. At a time when team spirit is all important it has been Drogba as much as any other player who has been talking to, shouting at and persuading his team mates when needed. I know there are negative arguments regarding Drogba's on pitch behaviour, but I'm willing to put those aside, mainly due to the fact that I've never seen Drogba attempt to deliberately injure an opponent, and if his way of making defenders pay is by taking free kicks and penalties off of them fair play to the man. jcm28 Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Legend? I say yes. He's been amazing most of his time here and he brings many headaches to the opposing teams (see: Arsenal).
Ruh Buh Juh Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I'd say he's a legend. He is DEFINITELY the best centre forward I've ever seen, I couldn't care less about what people say about Torres or Rooney or Henry, Drogba is an absolute beast. No one has ever played like him before and not many people will, until Drogba's son comes along. We love you, Drogs.
Phillip Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 (edited) No, not yet. Needs a few more years of excellent play. The above posters are too quick on the "Legend" status -- the word is "LEGEND" for a reason. They would probably call Guddy a legend, but no, he was a very good player for us, but not a legend. Same thing for DeSailly (though very close in my opinion). Recent Legends: Zola, John Terry, and Lamps. Edited March 14, 2010 by Phillip
Mikstaw Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I think that he had a lot of years of great play...
clubhappy Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 No, not yet. Needs a few more years of excellent play. Same thing for DeSailly (though very close in my opinion). Recent Legends: Zola, John Terry, and Lamps. A few more years ? maybe 2 at most , but if your going to mention Lamps or J.T. you have to mention Drogs. BEST centre forward in the premiership for years.
Mikstaw Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Guddy isn't legend. He was just a superb player. Only Zola, JT and Lamps? We have got more legends, and I think that Drogba is legend too!
Phillip Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 Those three are my recent legends. Of course, we have many other legends from our glorious past.
Mikstaw Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 And I think that Desailly is legend too. He was superb skipper.
Chippy Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 And I think that Desailly is legend too. He was superb skipper. Gallas was pretty good at Hopscotch :)
Valerie Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 To me, beside being a hell of a player, a legend has a special Chelsea-mindedness to him, quite impossible to define. And, sorry to say, Drogba doesn't have that Chelsea-mindedness. So, a beast of a player, yes, a legend, no.
loz Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 For me the 'legend' status shouldn't necessarily be about performances and achievment. Players trying hard and playing well is what I feel is the minimum expectation as that is basically what they get paid very well to do. To become a club legend I feel someone has to be represent the club well on and off the field and has to act in a way that he thinks is in the best interest of the club and its fans. That doesn't mean always toeing the line, sometimes it can mean speaking out against the club if he feels it is necessary. A fine example is Mickey Droy - he, for me, is undoubtedly a club legend but he certainly didn't always toe the club line. What he did was represent the club in the way he thought was right and he was prepared to out a few noses put of joint if he fel they were letting the club, the players or the fans down.
mad_mac Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 I knew that this question would come up, and for the longest time I've been watching Drogba with the though "will he be a legend?" firmly in the back of my mind. Drogba took a while to get going, but that is the nature of any player coming into a new league. He was instrumental in us winning, and if silverware achievements are a measure of legendary status, then Drogba is certainly notching a few points up in that department. Some of the goals he has scored, the way he has out musceled defenders time and time again and scored some important goals; they all show just how important he is to Chelsea. His ability to score some impressive goals, his work for humanity, Africa, Aids awareness, and his home country of The Ivory Coast make him a true ambasador for the sport. I've never seen Drogba in a Red Top headline because of the way he made an arse of himself while out on the town. I think he is a very grouunded person in his personal life. However, there are always, and I mean ALWAYS some things that he does that just have me shaking my head in disbelief whe he is on the pitch, that just make it hard for me to completely let go and say "Drogba, you retire here, and you should be awarded legendary status." Getting sent of in the CL final. Going down if he loses control, rolling about like he's been shot, looking to the bench as if he's broken a leg when all he has is cramp, the whinging, the moaning... I understand why people from opposing clubs hate him too. Also, I know this may be contrary to my "seems grounded in his personal life," but all those stories about him bad mouthing the club, saying he never wanted to be at Chelsea, how he wanted to go play for Jose or move to a big European Club, etc. Then NO ONE made it known that they wanted him, that left a very bad taste in my mouth in regards to Drogba's status at our club. I honestly was saying "if you hate it that much, then f*cking leave!" That is not something a Legend says about the club that are somewhat granting him such status. In the same train of thought, I was disappointed by Lampard with his supposed "I want to go play in Italy" statements. Although for the most part I feel those were more press speculation than Frank actually saying anything. Drogba: important player, pivotal to our success, and the best striker I have seen at Chelsea? Yes Drogba: legend? No
valim Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 makelele is legend for sure Drogba ricardo carvalho cech all of them are legends
Scott Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 What's a legend? "One that inspires legends or achieves legendary fame." "Any person of extraordinary accomplishment." "a notable person whose deeds or exploits are much talked about in his or her own time" I think Didier Drogba fits those definitions, and so does Jimmy F. Hasselbaink for that matter. :)
kalpitv Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 He's truly world class and one of the best players we've ever had but it takes something special to be a legend. He has failed to make the right impression at times, on and off the pitch but sans him we would have been an all together different team. He pretty much defines our style of play and unplayable when in form, few would argue about this fact. I'd say, for him to become a cult hero and yes a 'legend', he'd have to score the winner in a Champions League final. But then, anyone who does that would. Even Salomon Kalou or Deco I reckon. Reclaiming the League would be good for a start. Everyone knows how he's drastically improved both on and off the pitch this season. He really is trying to do his bit by taking up all those initiatives in Africa. It is regarded as role model stuff in my dictionary atleast. Take a bow Didier!
Nibs Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 What's a legend?and so does Jimmy F. Hasselbaink for that matter. :) The size of Jimmy's arse, is, without question, legendary.
Nibs Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 makelele is legend for sure Drogba ricardo carvalho cech all of them are legends Carvalho? Great defender but no way a legend = certainly not a CFC legend anyway. As for Drogba, there is no question he is the best striker we have had for years. But he still has a bit to do for me to become a true legend. He blotted his copybook big time for me in the CL final. I know it was JT (and Anelka) who missed their penalties but it was Drogba who cost us lifting the trophy that night. If he was to make amends by helping us to go on to win it this season, then I might just have a rethink.
Mod Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 .. and so does Jimmy F. Hasselbaink for that matter. :) Don't hide mate. Jimmy is a legend, still loves us!
Ballack & Blu Posted March 14, 2010 Posted March 14, 2010 In a few years time when the current crop have retired,Drogbas playing exploits, his pace power finishing, and all round game will be remembered not just a player he is a LEGEND,whom we will talk about in the same league as JT and lamps.
