dkw Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 So after years of being told how poor Terry is, how hes massively overrated, relies on Carvallho/Alex/Cech/Essien (delete as applicable) etc, turns out he might actually be quite good after all. Well according to a certain David Villa anyway, but what does he know compared to the assorted morons and imbeciles who follow certain other lesser clubs than our beloved Chelsea. Andreas Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Villa is a great player and glad to hear him say those stuff about our Captain.
Backbiter Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Always good to see him get the acclaim he deserves.
Barry Bridges Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Even a writer, cant remember if it was Martin Samuel from the Mail or Lipton from the mirror, took a jibe at most England supporters saying anyone who thinks JT is not an England International needs to watch the West Ham match and then give their head a good shake. Dont care if he is the most hated man in the land or not, glad to have him captain of our club.
KrazyTea Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 Those are actually classy comments from Villa all around, not like The Guardian to take a quote nicely like that. Makes me believe he's really genuine.
stevo Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 We all like and rate him and thats all that matters. We know his worth.JT is a great player and excellent leader.
BlueNose Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 the best center back in the world without question
Bobbywoodhogan Posted September 19, 2010 Posted September 19, 2010 the best center back in the world without question I have a mate at work who hates him says hes sh*t etc and that Jagielka is better, I just laugh. But I always point to the fact that Terry has been named European defender of the year 3 times. Terry is in my opinion the best CB to ever play in the Premier League.

At least you only have to tolerate that once a week as I am assuming that is a care in the community one day per week release project.

I think that might be a bit over the top a great defender yes but best ever? I'm not so sure,i would rate Desailly ahead of him for one, Adams,Bruce etc are all worthy candidates, why is it that everyone thinks that to be a great defender you must make lots of last ditch sliding tackles?? This is not the sign of a top class defender, he should be able to read the game well enough not to have to make these type of challenges! Edited September 19, 2010 by bluewilky

Terry reads the game so well hes more than just a last ditch tackler hes also a very good distributor of the ball and knows when to just get rid of the ball. Only person I'd rate near him is Tony Adams. He uses his head and makes up for what he doesnt have in pace. If you think Terry doesnt read the game well you need to go back and watch a few DVDs BUT The best defender ever is without a doubt Paulo Maldini.

I wasnt talking about Terry in particular with the comment about reading the game that was just a general comment about the general consensus in English football! And in terms of best ever i would put Beckenbaur, Baresi, Gentile, all ahead of Maldini in my opinion.

sizzler85 Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 Forget about the best defender debate . Terry is the best captain of any football club in the world let alone Europe . There lies his influence on the game and a true leader . He marshals the team like no one has or can do and a born leader . Puyol comes next in the captain's race. We need him at any time and He is our man !!!

Surely Carvalho was an equally good defender but his leadership qualities put him in the bracket of Maldini/ Beckenbaur etc. Its tough to say whether he is the greatest of all time but he is a class act and there is no doubting about that. The fact that he has lost a yard of pace and still manages to put in stellar performances week in and out is a testimony to the fact that he reads the game well enough and is a complete defender.
SydneyChelsea Posted September 20, 2010 Posted September 20, 2010 I don't think that Terry is that good or ever has been that good defensively. He's no Desailly or Maldini who could go through entire matches making perfect tackles. Leadership aside the thing that makes Terry a top-class defender is his ability to transition from defense into attack. He is very good at intercepting but also I don't know of many midfielders let alone defenders who have his passing range. I would rate him as one of the top passers at the club. It's been less evident in recent seasons but his raking passes to Robben and Duff in previous years come to mind.
