Brilliant on the ball, not exactly rock solid defensively...

stoke game he was pants defensively..

wba's goal was partly his fault also

but hes tht mint with the ball i dont even care hahaha

I would love to see him play at the back of the midfield spraying the ball about, he could be lethal from that position.

I agree that it seems like he could play that role well, which makes me wonder why(according to what I've read) he was such an epic failure when he was played in that position earlier in his career.

He's so young I'm sure he could adapt, but it doesnt suprise me it's already been tried, he just looks like the kind of player who has superb vision and timing with his passing, surely wasted at CB ?

Looks to me like he tries to win the ball and keep it for himself as his primary defense block. When this works it looks great and shows real skill and ability. Thing is sometimes it doesn't work and the player with the ball runs straight around him. This might be alright if he was in a DM position and there was another line of defense, but if he is the last defender it could be a problem.

A few times he probably chosen to clear the ball away than to steal it. I'm sure he'll improve, though. Decision making and discipline is all.

His positioning for that free kick against WBA was great too (taken by Drogba). Only his first touch let him down, but even a striker could make that mistake.

Almost a carbon-copy of Ricardo Carvalho. Always toeing the line between foul and fair and technical skill that puts most Premiership attackers to shame. The one difference is it took a good two seasons until we really appreciated Ricardo Carvalho- in fact the criticisms of Luiz and Carvalho's early days are one and the same but the difference is Luiz has endeared himself with important goals whereas Carvalho was seen as breaking up the Gallas-Terry combination.

Sydney's comments echo my thoughts. Luiz has looked like the sort of centre half that will occsassionally make your heart stop but also looked like the sort of centre half who drives the team forward and adds some impetus when the midfield is stagnant. He is still young and his defensive ability will improve in time. Centre halves don't tend to peak until their late 20s so it is not surprising he is making a few errors just now.

I don't think we whould be looking to shift him into the midfield. Centre half is where he is most comfortable and that is where we should keep him.

Love him of course, have a strange feeling that he's not found his calling yet, he just doesn't strike me as a truly defensive player. He's been found out there a few times but I can see him improving greatly so either way can't complain.

Many times he moves to forward positions and just stays there to tackle for the ball instead of getting back to defensive duties ...but as I have observed may be most of the Brazilian defenders play in similar way e.g. Ramos, Marcelo etc.

Sometimes can be a problem if we lose on possession and a counter attack happens from opposite team.

But over all signs have been good so far with Luiz and those essential goals .

Brazilian defenders have always looked to go for the ball rather than stay with the man or maintain their positions . Luiz is doing that as well . A season ago . Alex used to get caught in such situations when he goes forward for the ball while the 2nd CB will be exposed.

When we look at the past , great CBs have always stayed with the defensive line and stand by the man. Though those players occassionally goes for the ball , they will do that only when there is enough protection at the back. Alex to an extent has overcome that and Luiz will surely overcome it . This is very important trait for a center back .

I used to discuss about this particular topic with my friend who is an arsenal fan. The reason Arsenal have not been able to win anything over the past 5 years is because they did not have a CB of that calibre who is willing to wait for the ball to come to him. We have a certain John Terry who is the master of that art and has always excelled in his position more often than not . I think by playing that way they tend to lose their unused pace and become slow. JT , Vidic are classic examples who get exploited by pacy forwards. The Brazilian CBs have always had pace but they get caught by going for the ball.

small change above..It should be Alves.

He always takes huge risks but that can open things as well for the attack. We need young and daring players so we are able to surprise opponents. So what if we let in a goal or two if we are able to win. We were so much better than the opponent saturday. Could have been 6-1.

Ramires has same qualities.

I can't wait for next season with Luiz, Ramires and Torres at their best.

"Legend" is thrown around way too much these days. He's a good player, but he's not even played half a season for us...

Zola is a legend. Osgood was a legend. Tambling was a legend. I'd hazard a guess that Lampard will go down as a legend once he has retired. But come on...Luiz? No.

If he keeps it up and stays at Chelsea long enough, he could well become a legend, but he's not one yet. Luiz is more of a cult hero.

I think your reading a bit too much into it, I presume it means the next step is to BECOME a Chelsea legend.

Aside from the footballing aspect, he seems like a great personality to have on the team too. He was hilarious in the interview with Torres and Lamps, and every locker room needs a good joker!

He has a BIG personality, a BIG haircut, and a very BIG future., he may not be a legend yet, but a few of us can see he has a BIG chance of being a Chelsea legend one day.

Haha great interview! Didn't know if he was being serious until he caressed Frank's face!
