Scholes Retires

In his prime, Scholes was a cracking player.

"Cracking" is a good word to describe him. I've always wondered if he really was such a poor tackler or if he was just a nasty player. In any case, he should have been booked and sent off far more often than he did. In his prime he was ok, but not as good as the English media wants us to believe.

If Zidane describes someone as good then I believe him. Scholes was a really good player...awful tackler and got away with it far more than he should have. Something we see with Rooney these days.

I don't like him and he is a horrible tackler. But I wont deny that he was a great player in his day. He could run a midfield.

Scholes was a great player. Superb passing and footwork, very intelligent on the ball and an excellent striker of the ball. Tackling was both sh*te and dangerous.

Rooney described him as the best player he's played with or against. On the same day he told TalkSh!te Messi is probably the best player ever.

Did Zizou say he was good or that he was tough to play against? The latter description is much easier to believe(they're not necessarily the same thing).

Zizou said he is 'undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation'.

Exact quotes:

“He’s almost untouchable in what he does. I never tire of watching him play. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get.

“One of my regrets is that the opportunity to play alongside him never presented itself during my career.â€

Fair enough, but I don't see what he sees in Scholes, but then again I'm just a fan of the game. I think he was a good player, but if someone asked me to name a complete footballer, he wouldn't be among the players that I'd think of.

Should this really be in the football forum?

Seriously, he could never time a tackle but over the last couple of years it got even worse; otherwise a very good player possibly slightly underrated

I think thats what made him a c**t. He can't have mistimed that many tackles, he was just a bully. Weighing him on pure talent though, he was a very good player and they'll find him hard to replace.

Class player at his best but his bad tackling became such a cliche that some commentators used to just chuckle whenever he sliced someone in half. At the end of Saturday's match five Barca players went over to Scholes to get his shirt. I think Iniesta got it in the end. Not a bad tribute.

Very true. I guess you could consider that a skill in itself - being able to get away with tackles like that for so long and to convince people that you don't really mean it; I can't think of anybody else that's come close.

Rooney described him as the best player he's played with or against. On the same day he told TalkSh!te Messi is probably the best player ever.

Here's his quote on Messi:

“Messi is the best player ever,†said Rooney. “What we’ve seen over the last two or three years is incredible. It will be difficult to see that again.

On Scholes:

“But he’ll be a big miss for us. He’s the best I’ve played with and against. He’s only small but it’s so difficult to get the ball off him. Every United fan will miss him.â€
