Ken bought the club 44 years ago. The purchase was overshadowed by events thousands of miles away.FB_IMG_1775122398097.jpg

Gotta be marching on a bit now Ken Bates. Bit of a clique but he divided opinion. He kind of tried to distance himself from the “ rowdy element” of our support when we were sh*t, however was no doubt aware that it was a substantial chunk of our followers. He weren’t all good, and he weren’t all bad

Example, when we played Portsmouth, night game 84- hundreds of seats got torn up- We had a massive mob out that night- Ken tried to spin it that it was the work of a dozen odd blokes ripping up multiple seats. Credit where due, he did stock his neck out to protect us

I was in the seats and only 15. Remember after game being kept in by police as they were looking round to try and nick people! Didn’t leave the ground until nearly 11pm.God knows how I got to school the next day!!

I was 18. Got home in the small hours and rung my Mum up to pick me up from Wimbledon Station- She wasn’t impressed. Remember the fella sitting opposite me on the train. He was probably about 25. Had a zebra striped Lacoste jumper on, real boxers face, aka Rocky Marciano.

Tried to post our game at Orient when the wall collapsed behind the goal followed by the wall collapse on the halfway line.

BUT it's come back as " age restricted" !!

The first away match I ever attended was a cup game at Leyton Orient in about 1958 when I was 10. We played in red and I couldn’t understand why we were getting booed all the time, particularly at corners … I think we won 2-0.

King Kerry scored in the 39th min and he also missed two penalties. The first, in the 29th min was saved, the other in the 62nd min,hit the crossbar! Paul Canoville scored our other goal in the 6th min.

We had played the previous day Mon 26th December, away at Shrewsbury!

A 3pm kick off saw us win 4-2. So we’d less than 24 hours to recover between games.

I was at that Portsmouth match. For some reason I went and sat on the benches at some point, maybe for the sake of nostalgia. Big mistake. Almost got piles it was so bloody cold.

I miss the sight of floodlight pylons at football stadiums . Part of our football heritage.

I also remember going to an away match at West Ham as a child and sitting on my own amongst all the WH fans .. yes really! I did have mates of course but they were all Tottenham supporters so I was often on my own at matches … getting to the Bridge was not a problem but how did I get to Upton Park? Anyway, the game was only memorable because of the really toxic atmosphere made even worse when one of our players clattered into their star player, Phil Woosnam, who had to go off injured … remember this was in the days before any subs. But after an absence of maybe 10 minutes Woosnam emerged from the dressing room and took up his position on the field … cue absolute bedlam with the most visceral and hate-filled noise from a football stadium that I’d ever heard mixed with unbelievable delight that he had returned. Funnily enough I remember feeling quite shaken by the scale of it but never frightened or vulnerable... It just wasn’t like that in those days …. no one had a dig at me or said anything really … today??
