Roberto Di Matteo The New Pep Gardiola?

Featured Replies

Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli, Claudio Ranieri, José Mourinho, Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Ray Wilkins, Guus Hiddink, Carlo Ancelotti, André Villas-Boas - crikey! that's some list, truly great Managers and pretty incredible squads, but one simple fact remains, only one man could deliver that elusive holy grail of football Sig - Roberto Di Matteo, also garnished with an FA cup, to boot, surely this is enough to secure the permanent position as club Manager? With b-lls the size of an elephant, could Di Matteo just be the new Gardiola

Robbie D is some kind of crazy. I can't put into words how happy it makes me that Roberto Di Matteo and Eddie Newton were the ones who finally led us to Champions League glory.

Kind of fitting we won the CL for the first time under the guidance of a Chelsea legend, rather than a random plodder like Grant.

RDM, deceptively nonchalant.

Am trying to find the video of Robbie walking away from a German interview last night... forgot that he speaks German and once again he gave a stupid interviewer no time... if anyone finds the link please post it!

He is the best manager in Chelsea history. Period.

I know he brought the holy grail to SW6, but surely you can't forget the other great managers, namely the Special One?

so much knee jerking...

I know, its not like he has just managed us to an FA and CL cup double now is it........oh hang on.

I think the better than Guardiola was tongue in cheek, but why shouldnt we want him as manager after the incredible way he turned our season around.

I know he brought the holy grail to SW6, but surely you can't forget the other great managers, namely the Special One?

Jose, (and Carlo for me), will always be remembered well for what they achieved. As does Claudio from bringing the likes of Lamps to us who have done so much. Jose brought us our first title in 50 years, Carlo our first ever double. They are legends, truly great managers who will be remembered both for their time at Chelsea and what they have done at other football clubs as well.

However they had time to build, mold their own sides and were not able to (by one means or another) take us to the top of the European tree. Robbie did, with a squad put on their knees and overcame sides that dumped out the new English Champions, the former English Champions, the back to back CL champions and last but not least followed it all by beating Bayern on their own turf.

As much as I admire RDM and what he's given us, I would not say he's the best ever. According to himself (and I think some players as well) he hasn't changed much with the team compared to what AVB had going on. I think he's done really well getting the guys together and grinding out some big results and he has done some good things tacticaly (and some bad calls as well I think).

And it's not like we've won more or less every game since he took over. Doesn't he have a worse winning percentage than AVB had? And haven't we dropped in the league?

I think that what we did in the cups (FA and CL) was amazing and it's partly down to RDM making some good decisions, but also down to the fact that the players really, really, really wanted this. He might have had a hand in it of course, but I doubt he moved the players hearts to the right place.

I will always hail RDM because he was here when we finally won the Champions League, but do I think he's our Messiah? No (he's just a naughty boy).

Give him one year, if it doesn't work out in the end Roman can still try to get Pep in.

A rolling contract for the coach may be the way forward for CFC, we can still rotate the position without burning money :)
