But if is for two holding midfielders positions, wouldn't it be better we signed a tall midfielder? We are beginning to have many short players in our team (Marin, Mata etc) which will not help us.

More of a younger Lampard really, and Frank needs to be used more sparingly. Josh would also be competing for Modrics position, but would Josh really be ready to deputise for Frank only a few months after not being ready to start at Swansea. No, no he wouldn't. apparently kdb really came into his own as a cm, before that he played as a left winger. i think its too early to peg him as a backup for mata when he hardly ever played as a 10

Yes, that's why I said "poor mans", because the way Lampard has played the last two months he's still far better than Modric. KdB has played a deeper role than Mata i Genk this spring, much more like a deep laying midfield player. He lacks the explosiveness to play nr. 10, just like Josh. Much better with his nose toward goal and full vision.

We also have Ramires who'se competing for a spot at the midfield. He's a good winger, but let's be honest, he's better in the midfield. Neither Rami, Lampard, Modric, KdB or Josh can take Mikel's role, they don't have the discipline or strength to play there. We need one pure holding midfield player. That's why I've advocated a purchase of Fellaini; when/if Drogba leaves/steps down we need one more tall player who can help on set pieces. Modric does not offer that.

There is no downside, it's just not a necessary signing. Especially not for the price being mentioned.

If we really want a pivot midfielder that badly then there are so many other options out there that offer you the same quality but at much cheaper prices.

He was great last night but it would be nice to have a DM that can pass a ball too, I just don't think he's good enough for our team.

Mikel is immense if he gets a partner in the pivot who can pass like a maniac, then his only job is to win balls and give it to the passer.

It's a common combination; destroyer (Mikel), passer (Lampard) and creator (Mata). The problem is a stabile "passer" solution so we can phase out Lampard gradually, Modric is just pure waste of money and the youth.

Modric is a brilliant player and better than the current version of Lampard. Josh couldn't even get time at Swansea, he clearly isn't ready to play a huge role for us. I'd expect de Bruyne to get loaned out for another year, as well.
