So let's say Roman decides to ditch Robbie, and Pep isn't available, and he goes after some up and coming talent in the Prem, someone like Brendan Rodgers, and Rodgers was available.

I'm not saying I'd like Rodgers and I'm not saying he'd be a success, I'm just hypothesising. He's gone to Liverpool and we all hope he fails.

Would Rodgers come .. ?

We've gone out and made quite a few summer signings, we've already identified who else we're going to get, we've allegedly guaranteed one of those signings which position he'll play, and we've released a couple of players, all without a manager.

Furthermore, we've just ditched a fella who brought home two trophies, including the big one, this is after sacking Jose Mourinho and Carlo Ancelotti, both of whom apparently had players foisted upon them (Shevchenko and Torres spring to mind).

Would he come, or are we going to find it increasingly difficult to attract top-notch managerial talent, and does it matter?

That's the question for you today folks.

Didn't Rodgers say that he wouldn't want to be Chelsea boss any time soon as he felt it would 'ruin his career' (or something along those lines). Personally, I don't think Rodgers is the right man for a top club - yet - and I could go on about why but that would be going off on a tangent.

I think that there still is the lure of the Chelsea position, especially given we've won the CL now and are in it next year, not to mention the quality of our squad at the moment and the signings we've made (and potential ones) would mean that we'll be knocking on the door for the PL trophy next season which means that the only thing that could deem the hot seat being a 'poisoned challice', if you will, is Roman's impatience. However, given that he's gotten the holy grail (ie. the CL) I think he'll be more inclined to give the next manager time for rebuilding as he sees we're in need of a transitional phase and a rebuilding process that looks more long term.

Definitely, at the end of the day the money is good. Also, with the quality of players we are buying for the next generation any manager worth his salt would be mad if they didn't want to have a crack at implementing their system and having a fair shot at trophies.

I think every manager knows by now that being the manager/coach at Chelsea is pretty much a tightrope from day one.

Its a bit like a rodeo bull..only a matter of time before you get chucked off!

Yes. Despite all the pitfalls, it's still an attractive job because of the big salary and a chance to work at a top club with world class players. Plus most top managers have a huge ego. They'd all believe they could succeed where their predecessors failed. And if it goes go t*ts up they get about £10m severance pay.

I know Rodgers said he wouldn't take the Chelsea job, but then it's easy to turn down a job you aren't likely to be offered. Didn't he also turn down Liverpool a few weeks ago?

Rodgers would have jumped at the chance, not that Roman would ever offer him a shot. Ruin his career, yeah right. What career? He was managing our reserves, ffs. He's done well with Swansea but expectations and pressure at Pool will be far bigger than what he'd experienced so far, so I'd wait before judging how good he really is.

Really don't know how good Rodgers is but I'm not so sure he'd have come to Chelsea. He said he wouldn't come, of course, like you say, that's easy to say when you've not been offered, but let's face it, when he said it, it was almost certain we would be looking for a manager this summer, so he ruled himself out even if it was a long shot.

With Liverpool, he never said he didn't want the job, he said he didn't want to be part of a beauty parade. He did not want to be part of a long list of interviewees, which shows confidence. Also, once he'd been offered, it took four interviews before he accepted, because he wanted it on his terms, which meant the idea of having Van Gaal as sporting director was ditched.

He doesn't want for confidence that man and there's no way he could have made the same demands of us.

For me, this quote (and thread) sums up why RDM should get the job. No matter who is brought in as manager they are going to be facing a project in fitting these new pieces together with our older guard. And a still demanding owner. I just dont think that Pep or whoever else are somehow going to be ironclad choices that become the new Jose.

I guess if we see another midseason disaster and a manager gets the chop, I would rather go through that failure with RDM than anyone new.

I think any manager would want to manage us, simply for the chance to coach world class players, earn sh*tloads of money (regardless of whether they get sacked or not!) and to compete for all the trophies. However, I do see the interference from above as being a deterrent to many managers, particularly those from the UK where managers tend to exercise greater autonomy than those from abroad. However, in Italy and Spain, its pretty common to have a technical director overshadowing the manager, as well as an owner/director involved in matters on the field (Berlusconi, Perez etc). So in that sense I don't think that, for example, Guardiola would be put off that much knowing how much input Roman has.

At the end of the day I do wish that Roman wouldn't meddle as much as he does and tha would stand off and allow the manager to act freely. But we have to be grateful for the incomparable period of success he has helped to bring to our recent history, and when consider the investment he has made, I'm not sure anyone can really blame him for being so 'hands-on'.

Was it? I didn't catch that. What a shame. Having Van Gaal on board guarantees in-room fighting, and I would have loved to see that incredible arrogance at work, destroying the bindippers from within :laugh2:

If indeed he is available, I really hope he's not on our list :shok: Horrid man.
