First thing I thought of was somebody's post about hoping Spain have an early exit. Good for us bad for Spain... The match wasn't aired here in the States (watched GB instead) but there seemed to be quite a stir at the final whistle with Jordi Alba and DeGea (sp?) berrating the referee that level-headed Mata cooly broke up...

Not a big fan of DeGea (again sp?)... He seems to think he is world class already and comes off as an arrogant pr*ck!

Anyway, hopefully Mata will be back soon enough but with the amount of football he has played this past year hopefully he takes a few weeks off and reminisces how fine a year it was in the trophy department.

He'll be back fairly soon, even if the club has granted him until mid September. Any player worth his salt will be itching to get back, win his place and play football. No doubt about it.

If I was Mata I would certainly get back ASAP, otherwise Hazard will have his spot

Ha. Good one. Mata ran our team last year. Mata will be the first person picked in the team whether it is in the middle or on the left. Him and Hazard will probably roam and switch a lot.

It was said tongue in cheek. It takes longer than a month to erase memories of what he did last season.

If we win every game with the same midfield 3 of marin hazard and ramires then there would be no need to change would there. He would have to wait for his chance.

I'm gutted he is missing until mid september though. Does he really need a month and a half off?

No i don't think so , i don't buy into this whole tired thing . Also it's not liked he played much of Spain's Euro success , about 5 minutes wasn't it ?

Give him 3 weeks at most , that is plenty of time.

Mata definitely wore down as the season went on last year. If we can afford to give him some time off at the start of the year, I think it'd be for the best. A month and a half does seem excessive, though.

In an ideal world, we let him rest until the third PL game and we are no worse off for it. Obviously, the world is never ideal, so we'll see what happens.

Mata was clearly tired by the end of last year, however, and even if he didn't play in the Euros, he was practicing every day while guys like Ramires and Mikel were on a beach with their feet up. He could use a little time to recharge the battery. Hope he doesn't play in Spain's third game, while hoping that Romeu does.

He didn't play at Euros but he had to train every day as well.

It's also a mental thing, he needs some time completely away from football to recharge and refocus. To us lay people it seems like football is just a game but to a professional it's a job and comes with all the necessary stresses of employment. Professional athletes are trained to perform at the limits of human physiology, with that comes the price of a very high injury risk.

I prefer that we look after our players, if you buy an expensive car you also need to spend a lot on its maintenance, players are the same they are expensive assets that need to be maintained accordingly and no shortcuts should be taken. With so little rest, Mata would be at a high risk for injury coming into the season and we really can't afford to lose him for an extended period of time with so many new players in attack trying to settle in, nor is it the right thing to do for the person.
