Platini pushing for winter World Cup

Featured Replies

Platini wants the 2022 world cup, which will be held in Qatar, to be in the winter. The move would require all major European Leagues to take a month-long winter break, including England's Premier League which has no mid-season break at all.

Platini believes there is enough time to work out how to organize the domestic leagues around a winter World Cup.

"In 10 years we can manage to decide how we can postpone the season for one month," he said.

"January is difficult for the World Cup because you have the Winter Olympic Games. If we stop from November 2 to December 20, it means, instead of finishing in May, we stop in June. It is not a big problem. It is for the good of the World Cup, the most important competition in the world."

However i can't see any good points in doing this, firstly the month long break would require all of the premier league matches a month later which would also push champions league games as well. In addition to all the future players in the premier league would be too tired to play in the premier league coming back straight the biggest sporting event in the world. Those are the main two reasons why it would be a problem to host it in the winter.

What's your reactions in this winter world cup idea?

Couldn't give a toss either way really. England might fair slightly better if it was in the winter, as they tend to struggle in hot climates, but that's about it.

Is this his way of saying the decision to award the WC to a country with summer temperatures that could kill participants was completely and utterly deranged and just a teeny bit dodgy?

This just sums up how corrupt these mugs really are. Giving a country no one has heard of the world cup whilst not even knowing what months it would be played in. It would be ridiculous to have a world cup in december! Would ruin the whole season in my opinion. Qatar need to build stadiums with roofs on and air conditioning. Only way a world cup over there would work. Or just play the games at night!

It's bonkers and impractical. It's all very well saying that we have a break in the season and play until June. Ok. So when does the next season start? If it still starts in August, by the time pre-season and the all important US and Far East tours are performed it will mean virtually two uninterupted back to back seasons for the top players. And Lord knows when the African Cup of Nations and the Copa America (increasingly effecting us) will fall in all this.

It's time the European clubs reminded these gravy train tosspots at UEFA and FIFA who 'owns' all the top players and who could pull the rug from under the governing bodies at the drop of a hat!

International football is becoming an increasingly dull and uninteresting spectacle. As the styles of world football merge into one and the continued access to all football by TV and internet means that seeing the top players is a weekly occurrence, there is simply no appeal in international football. '86 maybe '90 was that last time there was a World Cup that was worth watching.

It really depends on what the other countries want to do, and more importantly, who fancies lining his pockets the most.

Australia could have hosted it in our winter.

Would have been fantastic. Perfect football weather if you ask me.

Quite frankly, Platini and his corrupt, plutocratic counterparts can go f*ck themselves as far as I'm concerned. Giving the WC to both Russia and Qatar in such illicit, clandestine fashion demonstrated pretty clearly to me how anti-England and downright bent FIFA and UEFA are. Its pretty sad really how corrupt they are and how they dont even try to hide it - Platini's proposal is more or less a means of trying to justify the disgrace that is the fact that Qatar have the WC.

Also, it would be completely impractical for both the clubs and the national teams, and would severely disrupt the domestic league seasons across Europe. In fact I'd go as far as to say it would pretty much ruin the season.

England should have used the millions they spent on the campaign to get the World Cup as bribes instead. Would probably have worked better.

As for Qatar getting it, well seeing as how UEFA and FIFA has campaigns for tolerance and anti-racism and such, why the f*ck give it to a country that know f*ck all about tolerance.

Russia I can understand since football is growing bigger and bigger there.

It might still be too cold, depending on where of course.

It'll be winter in Brazil technically as well, but I don't think its a good decision based on European football being the centre of the football universe and it would just great more headaches than it would solve.

Doubt it, I mean, it gets chilly, yes, especially Melbourne, but never too cold to play football, because there's no chance of snow etc in likely match destinations.

Winter in Australia is far better than summer in Qatar for football, that's for sure.
