Ashley Cole is not the bad guy many perceive him to be

HUGE numbers will recoil in horror at this suggestion – but Ashley Cole isn’t a complete rotter you know.

The Chelsea star reaches a milestone against Brazil on Wednesday.

He will become only the seventh England player to reach 100 caps, but in the eyes of millions he is villain not hero.

But speak to people at England, Chelsea and former club Arsenal and you will hear so many good things about the left-back.

Yes, he has a rap sheet almost as long as his list of honours – including cheating on the nation’s darling, Cheryl Cole, swearing in front of a policeman outside a nightclub, doing 104 in a 50mph zone and shooting a student with an air rifle at training – but there is a good side to the 32-year-old.

Arsenal’s former head of communications, Amanda Docherty, remembers how a young Cole donated his Audi TT to be auctioned by the David Rocastle Trust, because the late Gunners star was his idol.

On another occasion, Cole agreed to be interviewed for a journal written by kids. He was so concerned about how they would get home afterwards, he arranged for a taxi and paid for it himself.

And when Docherty left Arsenal in 2010, Cole was the only player at her leaving do. She had not invited any players, but Cole found out and stayed for two hours.

Similarly, England’s press team reckon Cole – despite insisting he will not talk to the media – is a joy to deal with.

Chelsea’s people say the same thing too, insisting Cole treats EVERYONE at the club with the same respect.

From a personal point of view Cole, through his agent Jonathan Barnett, in happier times, agreed to donate a pair of signed boots for a Great Ormond Street auction.

Imagine my surprise when I went to collect them to find Cole in Barnett’s office to hand them over and have a chat.

Also, around that time when he did do interviews, I had a one-on-one with him and was impressed at how self-critical he was, refusing to blame a serious ankle injury for poor early form with the Blues.

Sadly for Cole, though, unlike fellow recent centurions David Beckham and, to a lesser degree, Steven Gerrard, he has never been a national icon

His reputation plummeted after he left Arsenal for Chelsea in a controversial move in 2006.

Unwisely, he published his autobiography ‘My Defence’. He had a right to grumble in it about Arsenal going back on their £60,000-a-week promise and dropping it to £55,000.

His huge mistake was to reveal how he almost cried and crashed his Aston Martin when he was told of the cut.

So, in short, the Three Lions ace is not all bad. Maybe one day he will look back on his career and see it as an opportunity wasted.

He could have been a real role model and Wednesday’s game at Wembley a big celebration of a remarkable career.

So, Ashley, how about stepping out from that Twitter account and talking in depth once again?

That is mental.....A wasted opportunity?  He is one of the most decorated players around. The only thing he hasn't won is trophies at international level......but who has with England since 1966?  No-one!

I think they mean a wasted opportunity in the sense of being an idolised role model in the game as apposed to a hate figure.

Yeah I'm sure that keeps him up at night when he's rolling around in money and medals and hanging out the back of pop star strumpets.

The whole 'role model' thing is forced upon them.

The 'nations darling Cheryl Cole' Do me a favour. She s the medias darling, everyone with half a brain sees her for what she is, a two bob gutter rat. If she was't famous she would be in a shop doorway throwing up at 3am every morning.

I'm in complete agreement.

Give a Twenty-Something year old 100K a week and the last thing on their mind is if they are liked by media.

Nope, fast cars and gold plated toilets is what they are thinking of and I won't hold it against them.

End of the day no one says Tom Cruise shouldn't be paid $10m for making yet another Mission Impossible film but footballer should be ashamed that someone is willing to pay them millions to play the game they love professionally?

Yup.....also....with the role model thing.....why is it only them who have to be a role model to youngsters?  People say that youngsters look up to them, idolise them and want to be like them....but that is also the case with musicians.....and they're almost expected to mis-behave.  If Ronnie Wood gets mullered on a cocktail of booze and drugs.....then humps a young model who is younger than some of his liver spots.....then falls out of a window....it is merely seen as his latest sex, drugs and rock'n'roll escapade.  Yet if a footballer did it they'd be lambasted.

You're right with the money thing too.  No one seems to begrudge the likes of Tim Henman who is now a millionaire after winning precisely zilch tennis grand slams in his career.  Why was he never described as 'over paid'?

She is naturally very pretty but yeah, it's a case of nature vs nurture.  If she hadn't 'made it', who knows what she'd look like.  It makes me laugh when they call her a fashion icon.  What utter bollocks.  She is now a clothes horse for fashion designers to dress up so of course she looks good.  Left to her own devices and she'd still be wearing some hideous velour tracksuits with JUICY written on the arse, have her hair pulled back and be dripping in more gold than Jimmy Saville standing next to Mr T in H Samuels.

Exactly, we all knbow what she is, but the media and brain dead women are obsessed with her.

All true.....but you've gotta admit.....what was Ash doing cheating on her with that girl!?  Did you see her?  That was the worst decision since sacking RDM and bringing in Benitez.  I don't think I've ever seen such a downgrade since Charles left Diana for Camilla.

LOL, something different though and maybe she was much better in bed.

I guess.  You don't want rump steak every day do you?  Sometimes a greasy burger can be just as satisfying.  That said, that was possibly the greasiest, most tasteless rat burger in the history of mankind.

Ashley Cole has won as many FA Cups as Liverpool, Chelsea and Aston Villa, and as 1 person there are only 3 clubs in the 131 season history of the Cup who have won more; United, Arsenal and Spurs.

Add to that a Champions League, 3 Premier Leagues, a League Cup, numerous smaller trophies, numerous individual awards, being part of the first undefeated top flight team in over 100 years, 100 England caps and the fact he's probably the best left back in English history, and probably top 3 or 5 all time in his position, I don't see how he's missed opportunities.

Not his fault the rest of the England squad perform like a squabble of muppets in tournaments.

It never ceases to amaze me, how Ryan Giggs seems to have escaped unscathed, from the scandal of getting his Brothers Wife pregnant, this is proper duelling banjo's stuff and its rarely mentioned in the press, or thrown up in his face...

Then I remember he plays for Man Utd...

8 year affair with your brother's wife is okay.

Unconfirmed affair with ex team mates ex girlfriend... bad!

Ryan Giggs(Done his brothers wife),Wayne Rooney(necrophilia),Race Card Rio(Drug cheat),Ledley King(Racially abused bouncer and attacked him),Steven Gerrard(Fighting in clubs),the list is prpbably bigger but none of their crimes count because they are not Chelsea.

i think there was an article which tweedy said she felt her ashley was getting fed up with her putting on teeth braces and other nocturnal habits which were a romance killer! so i guess it's no wonder he wandered around!

It still amazes me to this day the hypocritical reaction of the manure and dippers fans. I know I shouldn't be , but when you take away the slagging and club bias to have a shot at Ashley and JT when Giggs Rooney Rio and Gerrard have their own demons really shows what a shower of halfwits they come across as.
