Howard Webb's Officiating In Cup Praised By Referees Chief Keith Hackett

Hackett also said there was no need for Blues boss Jose Mourinho and opposite number Arsene Wenger to walk on to the pitch to try to calm the situation.

"The managers should not have gone onto the pitch, absolutely not. There were enough people out there to control the incident and you do not want that to happen.

"It might have been with good intentions, and I know it was a very passionate game, but it should not have happened and I'm sure it will be looked at by the FA."

This part is interesting to me. I understand how it could be policy for the referees' chief to have the FA look into managers' entering the pitch, but this situation seemed different to me when I was watching it live.

When the first scuffle occured between Mikel and Cesc, it seemed as if it was something small. It was not until the rest of the players rushed the situation to "break up" the fight, that the tempers began to truely flare. Some players thought they were getting attacked by people trying to break it up, and everything in general "heated up". Every new player that entered the scuffle seemed to make it worse. Frankie's interview stated that. He said he went in to break it up but ended up in a fight of his own.

When Jose and Arsene entered the pitch, it felt as if they were saying to their players with their presence (and Jose's face) "Guys...what the f*** are you doing? This is embarrasing, snap out of it!" It seemed to have a good effect as well, who more to listen to as a player than your manager?

Just my two cents, anyone disagree?

Well I agree. The ref and his linesmen could perhaps have handled it but it was all resolved more quickly with Mourinho entering the pitch. I won't mention Wenger because it seemed to me that he entered just because JM did and then he didn't do much (if any). JM entered the group of players and pulled them appart. Too bad he didn't wear a mic because I would love to hear what he said icon_wink.gif

I understand if FA (those effing c*nts) have to go by the rules and look into this but if there's any punishment I will...probably just sit here and scowl icon_rolleyes.gif

I've watched it over and over again and it's all down to Fabregas. Toure would have calmed down and both him and Mikel could have ended with just yellows (don't think Mikel warranted a red for the infringement anyway).

But little Cesc wades in, throttles Frankie and it all goes tits up thereafter.

The FA panel should award accordingly:

Fabregas: Red

Toure: Red

Eboue: Red

Mikel: Yellow

On another note, I don't know why players who aren't involved in this sort of thing (i.e. everyone bar direct combatants and perhaps captains) don't just sit down on the grass and declare themselves out of it. Drogba was getting my goat because all his peace-making was doing was getting others irritated and he could have ended up a la Adebayor.

Robben had the right idea - he just walked away.

I think that if im being honest if that little rat Fabregas deserved a red then so did Frank - Frank went in to try and stop it all but actually ended up making it a whole lot worse (along with Ratfregas)

He would - he's the messiah.

Can't see how Mikel got a red? Looking at it, he had a few words, then when the ref told him to go away, he put his hands in the air and walked to the back.

Your right Mike, it was all Fabregas. Cocky little sh*t, who obviously hated losing so much, he vented.

agreed bjd. I actually felt webb did quite well- I think he's one of the better refs but the "melee" was always something that needed retrospective action. I think jose and wenger were right to go onto the pitch to try and control their players.

Drogs also slapped Fabregas from behind on the back of the head so I bet he'll get a ban. Adebayor got his red for wading in with his arms so no chance he'll get off, and his ban will be extended for his reaction to the card. I heard we've challenged the Mikel card so hopefully the video will clear him. Eboue should get a ban and Bridge will have joined Robben and Drogs on the list of Chelsea 'overreactors'. Jose will be banned to the stands for the rest of his contract and Wenger will be warned never to make the FA think about possibly taking action against him ever again.

Although Bridge may have over-reacted, it appeared after he got struck on the head, Eboue was then pushed into him which made Bridge fall to the ground. Although he probably stayed down a little longer than needed.

I thought bridge was on the ground because adebayor swung to the left side of the camera and hit bridge in the head. I know I saw him hit someone...

oh come on, all frank was doing was trying to stop mikel doing something he might regret. of course once fabregas grabbed him and tried to remove his head he might have got a bit upset!

the correct cards should have been yellows for mikel and for toure and probably in the end for frank. red for fabregas and for eboue and possibly for adebayor

I wouldn't say that turning your back on a professional footballer's handbags session is a sign of lacking b*****s - even cowardly Colin can just about cope with some light chest shoves and primary school 'My Dad's Bigger than Your Dad' arguments.

Lets face it 99% of football scuffles are as intimidating as an S Club 7 video - it's actually cringeworthy to see them flex their wallets as they chest bump each other around the park.

I would have safely bet my mortgage that my posts would have got a reaction from you Bluebeard (I also had a sneaking suspicion that we may see those very clips!)

At least you got sent off for venting spleen properly icon_lol.gif Getting sent off for bumping your chests together or a bit of flat palm shoving is just a waste of effort!!

So true! I can remember Gary Sprake giving Bobby Gould a right hook, and Terry Yorath sparking out an opposition goalkeeper. I even saw Ossie land a couple of decent right-handers!

Altogether now, "Those were the days, my friend......" PDT_box.gificon_lol.gif

Bluebeard,

You haven't got a clip of Spackman decking Keown c 94? I think it was Nigel's only red of his career and it happened right in front of me in the old West stand

Frankly it was a beaut and no more than that monkey faced twat deserved.

That was indeed a beaut! icon_lol.gif

I'm sure I've got a clip of that somewhere - I'll have a look later today and get it posted if and when I find it.

Oh for the days of yore, when footballers actually hit each other rather than fannying around pushing each other like the big tarts they are now.

Cause & Effect

That Lee bloke certainly made up for his lack of arm span with his weight advantage icon_razz.gif
