Petr Cech to Arsenal

I merely have been trying to point out, here and in the Lampard to City thread, that players are entitled to make choices that some supporters won't like. It's totally silly how some supporters take the choice to go to a rival team as a personal affront and wallow in bitterness, saying they will not applaud those former players. To which I say there is no reason not to applaud them as a greeting to former players who did very well for us.

I've got to agree with Barry, for players like Cech & particularly Lampard as you've mentioned, playing for Chelsea for over 10 years should be more than just a job, especially with things they've said about the club & fans relationship over the years. You or I moving jobs is completely different, I don't have 40,000 people singing my name each week as I work away at my desk. I don't have supports who I've built a relationship with in my job. I am also not a multi-millionaire.

As Barry said if they view it as only a job, why should we treat them any different like you say, if we were drawing parallels to normal people, if we walked back in to the office of our previous employer of 10 years would they all applaud us? I highly doubt it.

I'm not having a go at you Val but I think Cech & Lamps both knew what they were doing, and if they weren't aware it would leave a bitter taste in the mouth of some fans, they've dug their head in the sand. I wouldn't go as far as to say either have tarnished their legacies but it does leave a bitter taste for me & leaves a small black mark on their time with us, the likes of which Drogs, JT & Cole, done have.

Depends on what sort of fan you are. If your the sort who appreciates what a fantastic servant he was for the club or one who try as they might just doesn't quite get football sorry soccer. Just answering

Can't decide if this is Blue Daze or not, although it could be Stand Up, I'm going with Wrote For Luck though!

The constant inferring that some people on here aren't 'proper' Chelsea fans or insinuating that they theirselves are better/more of a fan than them for reasons X, Y & Z is getting tedious. It's not even being used in the right context sometimes and it seems to be a new thing (unless it's just more apparent lately) that Blue Daze seemingly left on this forum.

Without knowing a person's circumstances no one can judge how much of a fan someone else is. There isn't a true list you can tick off that qualifies someone being a, sigh, proper fan. Yes there are people who are able to be more dedicated because wealth, location, flexible job arrangements etc allows them to go to games, travel through Europe etc... but not everyone is that fortunate and things like health reasons, family and/or job commitments prevents them. In addition how you FEEL about a footballer doesn't make you more or less of a fan either. Those in anger that the club are selling Pete to Arsenal are no more or a fan than those who, whilst aren't happy, understand why they're doing it and visa versa.

By the way I quite agree with Barry for the record, top post.

Very true Gem, it bugs me as well all this proper supporter rubbish!

When I was a young man and had very few commitments I went to games home and away regularly, as I got older other things started to take priority and I went less. Now I don't live in the SouthEast I rarely go.

Life moves on, some people need to deal with it!

Indeed. I will say that I get the idea that the match going public do have a better... understanding of personal hurt because they've seen it first hand for 10 years. However it simply doesn't make them more of a fan.

always gets awkward for me when someone says so and so was a great servant to the club...its not like they played for us for free or for cheap....i feel like we're the servants considering a significant portion of our wages every week go into this club

Unless he had two live accounts before the banning it's unlikely, but my instinct as well

I get where you coming from alright

The proper supporter stuff is a pathetic way to try and insult someone. For me if Chelsea are in your heart that's all that counts, whether you go to a game, a 100 games or not it doesn't make you any less or more of a supporter. What makes you a supporter is that you care for this great football club.

I'm kind of over it to be honest, when I first heard ?ech was going to Arsenal I'll be lying if I said I wasn't annoyed, at the club and even ?ech slightly. However, ?ech was a great servant to the club, after he retires he'll only be known as a Chelsea legend, we have to move on and the club has to focus on finding a new keeper.

The stoke keeper seems happy to come

I agree for your right to appluad or not appluad but Valerie does go to games but living in the Netherland makes that bit harder. So I don't understand what you mean by if you went to games you'd understand comment care to explain ? Personally what cech has done doesn't sit kindly with me but its done now so we have to move forward.

Of course we have to move on. I was expressing my feelings on the matter. If the person sitting next to me decides to applaud Cech then that's fine as it's his choice.

The "if you went to games you'd understand" comment? I've been going to Chelsea for 35 years. We accept players come and go but any players going to our rivals don't generally get a good reception. If you don't go to games or are not from London you will not understand the rivalry like someone who is. As I said I won't boo Cech and I'm sure he'll get a fair reception. Just like you it don't sit right with me.

I'm going to Chelsea since 94 I'm 31 years of age I'm not from London and I whole heartly understand the rivalry so saying that if your not from London is a weak argument. Many of Chelsea match day support is from outside London

My dad is going to Chelsea longer then you and he's not from London does that mean he don't understand the rivalry

If you read my comment you will see that I said you won't understand the rivalry unless either you attend games or are from London. That's where you get the banter/rivalry with other fans. And for the record I've never said that if you go to the games it makes you a proper or better fan. I was merely pointing out understanding the rivalry.

Considering my front window of my house got put through with a golf club the night we bet arsenal in the champions league I know plenty about rivalry I live in Ireland and you can ask any Irish Chelsea fan on here what rivalry we have to put up with following Chelsea we get it from all angles your arsenals scousers Celtic fans and scousers. So rivarly is huge over here.

When people say people don't understand rivalries because they aren't from or live there, it makes me laugh.

Fair point and i take that back! But when someone says they're ok with one of our players going to your rivals and then telling you that you should applaud him and can't understand why you won't then that's when I question if they understand the rivalry?

I'm merely pointing out I'm not from London and I do understand the rivarly. I'll buy you a drink when I'm over lol we can have a chat about rivarly

It's an each to their own situation, I am annoyed we've allowed Cech go there and I'll always appreciate what he did for us but now I hope he has a torrid time.others won't agree but as I said each to their own.

I know plenty of people who go to games who know or care little about rivalries, and plenty of people who don't go to games who are very passionate about Chelsea. It's not necessarily a factor.

The forum has been through this debate before, Standup, so it's a bit unneccesary for the same stuff to just be trotted out again.

Not a problem
