I just checked. Willie Donnachie did play three more  for Scotland after the 1978 World Cup.

Against Austria, Norway and Portugal all in 1978.

The same three games that Man Utd's Martin Bchan played in in his last three games for Scotland.

Scotland only had four players in their squad in 1978 who had actually played in the 1974 World Cup.

Sandy Jardine, Martin Buchan, Kenny Dalglish and Joe Jordan. Willie Donnachie and Gordon McQueen were both in the squad for 1974, but neither played.

McQueen injured knee ligaments against a post in that 'Willie Donnachie OG game' at Hampden in May 1978 and travelled, but never played in Argentina 1978.

The first one leaves more of an impression as it creates a new experience, IMO.

Mexico 86 for me. Long hot summer. Playing football non stop at school and when I got home. Washing my Chelsea kit every night so it would be clean for the next day. Great England side. And witnessing the genius of Maradona.

He was doing so well until the last bit. We beat poor teams in 2018 and completely folded against Croatia..who lets face it, weren’t that special.

Agree with that part. But I had never seen anyone play like that before. Plus he took the limelight away from that w**ker Platini who was supposed to be the ‘star’ of the tournament.

Yeah Maradona was the player, by far, of the 1986 World Cup.

And yes I know 100%, that he cheated big time with the 'hand of god'. goal

Platini had had a brilliant Euro 1984 Tournament to be fair though.

1998 was the best and the first one for me, I was 13. I think you tend to enjoy football more as a child or teenager, I think the era pre Roman for us 1995-2003 was the best time watching football. Its hard to explain but it was just special. Nowadays I don’t watch footy outside Chelsea much, when you have kids, husband, job and mortgage your mind drifts elsewhere I’m afraid!

Jim Blyth never played for Scotland again after this match. He had a very good season for Coventry City in 1977/78.

Willie Donnachie and Asa Hartford were a very good left sided combination for both Man City and Scotland in the mid -late 1970s.

Mexico 1970 and the greatest football team ever. Our next door neighbour had the first colour TV in our street and I remember watching games round there with my dad.

Pele, Tostao, Rivellino, Jairzinho, Clodoaldo. Their weakest link was the goalkeeper Felix but he often didn't have a lot to do. This was in the days when pitches were sh*te and opponents, (mostly Italy and Argentina), were allowed to kick the holy snot out of anybody who had the ball or didn't and refs just waved play on over a dead body.

I moved back to the UK as an 8 year old in 1983 so can't really speak to world cups before that as I was too young and where we lived didn't have TV.

Probably the English world Cup  memory for me as a teenager would be the Platt goal against Belgium in 1990. Last minute of injury time and the country exploded.

However overall from that era it has to be Maradona in 1986. Forget the hand ball. Start to finish that was the greatest tournament display from an individual I've ever seen. 

The 1974 World Cup was the first I watched as I was just getting into football as a seven year old. Scotland qualifying meant there was great coverage and excitement up here.

A great many people got their first colour tv to watch this tournament up here.
