Action films are a bit hard to classify to be honest (horror is a lot easier). For example it is easy to see why Die Hard would be classifed as an action film and rightly so, however would you classify Apocalypse Now as an action film as well? Certainly action in it, but at the same time there is an underlying story to it which places it a million notches above Die Hard in terms of being a thought provoking film. Similarly Rocky, great film, in fact fantastic film, an action film, again no shortage of action, but is the action part to it the core entertainment, possibly not.

Similar points could be made for films like Jaws, Platoon, King Kong (the original one), The Terminator, Spartacus, Dirty Harry, The Dirty Dozen etc etc etc etc etc

Horror is generally a lot easier and when making a list of Horror films it goes like this:

'The Exorcist' sits in my top 10 ever films let alone top 10 horror films (and to be honest I can take or leave horror as a genre, never really been that fussed about it). Although again this throws up questions about what you would include as horror. If we are to include things like Psycho, some of the classic 1930s Frankenstein films, The Omen, and also modern day comedy horrors like 'From Dusk Til Dawn' then it opens it right out.

Good action films:

Not too into action films, but I love a good horror flick!

1. Nightmare On Elm Street - was 7 when I first saw it, my innocence was officially gone

2. Friday the 13th

3. Texas Chain Saw Massacre... probably the one that scared me the most didn't mind the remake that much either.

4. Evil Dead

5. Pet Cemetery - put me off cats, and kids for a while.

My top 5. And although I can pretty much sit through all of them, I daren't touch the Saw movies, modern graphics are a bit too real

You won't have seen Hostel then? Or My Little Eye, of a few years back, which I think counts as a horror. What surprises me though is that nobody's yet mentioned Carrie. I can still remember the first time I saw the film, years ago at the pictures ... that bit right at the end, when you think it's all over and you're expecting the credits to roll. Brian De Palma's finest moment and then some.

Apocalypse Now has a strong anti war message, so I classify it as a war movie. It sure isn't an action movie to me.

Just thought of another fantastic action film. How could I have left this one off the list!

Funny, we were talking about that film (the name of which I won't mention so as not to spoil the suspense/surprise) in the chat last night; that and the Wanderers, which is one of my favourite films of all time.

Another classic!

Most modern horror movies are rubbish. I've seen fluffy, pink bunnyrabbits who are scarier than modern horror movies.

There are of couse some exceptions. One that spring to mind is "The Others". Pretty scary movie. Spine-tingling.

Of the old ones I'm a huge fan of:

Alien (sci-fi/horror, I know)

Nosferatu (the 1922 version of course)

Psycho (if you're thinking of the remake then you're off your rocker, mate)

Halloween (greatest theme song ever?)

Now don't start thinking of the sequels. Psycho 1 is great, the rest aren't as good. Halloween 1 is great, the rest...no.

But this is of course common knowledge. Sequels (or prequels) are worse than the first movie 99% of the time.

I realise that I'm resurrecting this topic, which may have run its course, but glancing through it, I'm amazed nobody has mentioned The Wicker Man, which I think is so much more frightening than the Exorcist, because it is so plausible.

The Wicker Man takes me back to back to the point I made about films like Apocalypse Now. A superb film and definitely one I would consider if someone asked me to name my favourite 25 films ever but not one I would ever think of if someone asked me to name my top 10 horror films. The reason for this being that I don't see it as a horror film. Maybe that is for the very reason you say, that being that so much of it is entirely unbelievable (just last week I spent the night in our local hotel and was disturbed throughout the night by a naked busty Scandinavian pounding on the wall of my room with her fists)
