Favourite Action & Horror Films

Featured Replies

Here are a few that rock my world. Not in any order or anything. And in no way presented here as a 'complete list'; they're just some films I love.

(and yeah, I realize some of these cross genres. i.e. they're action / horror, horror/sci-fi etc)

ACTION

Die Hard

Die Hard 2

Aliens

Predator

V for Vengeance

Matrix

Long Kiss Good Night

Lone Wolf McQuade

Enter the Dragon

First Blood

The Terminator

Under Siege

HORROR

The Exorcist

The Howling

An American Werewolf in London

The Thing

Poltergeist

Dog Soldiers

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (70s version with Donald Sutherland)

Dawn of the Dead (original)

Evil Dead

Dead by Dawn: Evil Dead 2

Alien

Action films are a bit hard to classify to be honest (horror is a lot easier). For example it is easy to see why Die Hard would be classifed as an action film and rightly so, however would you classify Apocalypse Now as an action film as well? Certainly action in it, but at the same time there is an underlying story to it which places it a million notches above Die Hard in terms of being a thought provoking film. Similarly Rocky, great film, in fact fantastic film, an action film, again no shortage of action, but is the action part to it the core entertainment, possibly not.

Similar points could be made for films like Jaws, Platoon, King Kong (the original one), The Terminator, Spartacus, Dirty Harry, The Dirty Dozen etc etc etc etc etc

Horror is generally a lot easier and when making a list of Horror films it goes like this:

1. The Exorcist

M

A

S

S

I

V

E

G

A

P

American Werewolf in London

A

N

O

T

H

E

R

G

A

P

The rest!!

'The Exorcist' sits in my top 10 ever films let alone top 10 horror films (and to be honest I can take or leave horror as a genre, never really been that fussed about it). Although again this throws up questions about what you would include as horror. If we are to include things like Psycho, some of the classic 1930s Frankenstein films, The Omen, and also modern day comedy horrors like 'From Dusk Til Dawn' then it opens it right out.

Good action films:

Kung Fu Hustle

The Kill Bills

Desporado

Face/Off

Hard Boiled

Cheesy but still watchable action films (guilty pleasures):

Commando

Speed

Robocop

The Running man

Pitch black

Starship troopers

Bad boys 2

Not too into action films, but I love a good horror flick!

1. Nightmare On Elm Street - was 7 when I first saw it, my innocence was officially gone icon_rolleyes.gif

2. Friday the 13th

3. Texas Chain Saw Massacre... probably the one that scared me the most icon_eek.gif didn't mind the remake that much either.

4. Evil Dead

5. Pet Cemetery - put me off cats, and kids for a while.

My top 5. And although I can pretty much sit through all of them, I daren't touch the Saw movies, modern graphics are a bit too real icon_wink.gif

You won't have seen Hostel then? Or My Little Eye, of a few years back, which I think counts as a horror. What surprises me though is that nobody's yet mentioned Carrie. I can still remember the first time I saw the film, years ago at the pictures ... that bit right at the end, when you think it's all over and you're expecting the credits to roll. Brian De Palma's finest moment and then some.

Apocalypse Now is clearly a war movie. If there is a war going on, it's not necessarily a war movie. But if there is a war going on, but the movie's main focus is not on shooting guns and killing the enemy, I'd say it's a war movie. It's not easy to classify some movies, though. Aliens for example is about killing loads of aliens, but it's also a metaphor about Vietnam war. So does that also make it a war movie?

Thing is I don't see Apocalypse Now as a war movie, simply because the main theme/message is not war related, it is just set with war as the backdrop (much the same as in Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness') - if anything it is a study of man and man's varying reaction to the horror, the greed and the power that threatens us all.

For me if Apocalypse Now is to be classifed as a war film then the Deerhunter has to be as well and I don't classify that as a war film either.

Action movies.....

1...Die Hard [ all 3 of them ]

2...Midnight Run [ ok, kind of a comedy but still a great action movie ]

3...Swordfish

4...Heat

5...Bourne Supremecy/Identity

6...U.S.Marshalls

7...Independence Day

8..Any scouse confirmation or christening video [ plenty of fifghts there ]

9..The Italian job

10..Smokin Aces

Loads more im sure

Apocalypse Now has a strong anti war message, so I classify it as a war movie. It sure isn't an action movie to me.

I think you have just described some strong elements of warfare. icon_wink.gif

I saw a real horror job the other night had me peeping out from behind the settee, and have had bad dreams about it ever since, I think it was called CLSF part 2 Liverpool V Chelsea........AAAARRRGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Argh yourself Loz...are you suggesting we should classify movies based on the basic human emotions they deal with? icon_eek.gif

Or maybe we should go back to the roots and argue if we should classify them as tragedy, comedy or satyr... icon_lol.gif

Turn your speakers up as loud as they'll go...

I L.O.V.E THIS SONG!!!

Yippie Ki-ay mother f*cker...

Jeez, this was hard. I had a long old think, and a look at the videos on the shelf (yes Iam an old f**ker with VHS still)

So, in no particular order, except for the first Horror

Horror

The Exorcist - Top film in any genre

Don't Look back

The Omen

Hellraiser

A Clockwork Orange

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original, not so much the remake)

The Evil Dead

Near Dark

Blood Simple

The Lost Boys

Action - (I might have taken some liberties here)

Matrix 1 + 2

The Dirty Harry Series

The Man with No Name trilogy

The Blues Brothers Car Chases

Terminator 2

Predator

Alien

First Blood

Total Recall

The Dam Busters

The Eiger Sanction

There may well be more as I think some more, so I might have to come do some editing

Kev

From what i can think of:

ACTION

Terminator 1 & 2

Predator

Alien/s

The Bourne films...

Indiana Jones!

Die Hard

Total Recall

The Running Man

Blade Runner

The Last of The Mohicans

Lethal Weapon!

Kill Bill

GLADIATOR

Cliffhanger

HORROR

The Omen

Saw

The Ring

Hellraiser: I shat my pants at this one.

The Thing: And this.

The Shining

Exorcist

Just some titles in no particular order

Action:

Die Hard, Once Upon a Time in China, Indiana Jones Trilogy, James Bond - Goldfinger, Leon...

Horror:

Shining, Bride of Frankestein, Psycho, Nosferatu, Alien...

Just thought of another fantastic action film. How could I have left this one off the list!

Funny, we were talking about that film (the name of which I won't mention so as not to spoil the suspense/surprise) in the chat last night; that and the Wanderers, which is one of my favourite films of all time.

and the Wanderers, which is one of my favourite films of all time.

Another classic!

Most modern horror movies are rubbish. I've seen fluffy, pink bunnyrabbits who are scarier than modern horror movies.

There are of couse some exceptions. One that spring to mind is "The Others". Pretty scary movie. Spine-tingling.

Of the old ones I'm a huge fan of:

Alien (sci-fi/horror, I know)

Nosferatu (the 1922 version of course)

Psycho (if you're thinking of the remake then you're off your rocker, mate)

Halloween (greatest theme song ever?)

Now don't start thinking of the sequels. Psycho 1 is great, the rest aren't as good. Halloween 1 is great, the rest...no.

But this is of course common knowledge. Sequels (or prequels) are worse than the first movie 99% of the time.

  • 1 year later...

I realise that I'm resurrecting this topic, which may have run its course, but glancing through it, I'm amazed nobody has mentioned The Wicker Man, which I think is so much more frightening than the Exorcist, because it is so plausible.

The Wicker Man takes me back to back to the point I made about films like Apocalypse Now. A superb film and definitely one I would consider if someone asked me to name my favourite 25 films ever but not one I would ever think of if someone asked me to name my top 10 horror films. The reason for this being that I don't see it as a horror film. Maybe that is for the very reason you say, that being that so much of it is entirely unbelievable (just last week I spent the night in our local hotel and was disturbed throughout the night by a naked busty Scandinavian pounding on the wall of my room with her fists)

And you find it implausible that a voluptuous Viking blonde would demand admittance to your room in the night?
