July 19, 20223 yr What's so great about Bremer ? The guy is 25 and has never been anywhere near the Brazil national team ... and he plays for a mid-table Serie A outfit who'd make West Ham look like Man City. Ola Aina looked half way decent in the Torino backline ... he wasn't remotely good enough for us, so why is Bremer ?

De Ligt clearly preferred Bayern over us and paying even 100mil wouldn't have changed that. I think that’s more the case too. I think that our star has waned a bit in recent times (despite a EC win) and I don’t believe we’re the draw we were. And I suspect post Roman we’re seen as an unknown right now, so joining us might pose a risk of fanny-ing around in sixth place. Which big signing in the earlier part of their career wants to go first and join post Roman Chelsea? We’re going to have to try and work our way up this time. Edited July 19, 20223 yr by Snedger

We have never been THAT big a draw, even under Jose Mark 1. The idea the big superstars were queuing up to join us back then just isn't true.

Fair point, we weren’t attracting galacticos left right and centre, but we got Hazard, I’d say Robben was also an example of signing a known young player on the up. We got De Bruyne (before messing up) I’m sure there are a handful of others. Plus we were rich, glamorous and successful enough to lure older and established talent like Makalele and Ballack. Sterling has his best days behind him and he’s no Ballack (more Quaresma), and Koulibaly has appeared after most teams have given up after 5 or 6 years of trying to sign him. We’ve not and now got a player at the tail end of his career that if he’d signed for anyone else we’d would now be saying he’s been playing in a weak league for eight years and won’t cope here.
July 20, 20223 yr Bayern have signed him for £66m. That is a expensive but decent price. Think I would rather have Koulibaly.

A hidden gem that just needs polishing.
