Fringe players

Featured Replies

We have such a huge unnecessary squad, why do they do that? We selling many of our players at a loss, many of them are not even wanted by other clubs. What about all our youth players, when do they get opportunities. Some of them are more gifted than these expensive players we bring in.

Who have we sold for a loss?

By the end of this window we will have sold about 200m worth of players, most for a profit.

I’d guess by the end of this Transfer Window both Felix & Nkunku will have departed as PSR ‘losses’ however to counter that Madueke & Veiga’s fees should easily put us back into the positive.

There’s a lot to criticise with BlueCo’s ownership but I genuinely believe there transfer dealings are starting to show now as rather smart.

Regards the OP’s question about ‘The Yooooof’ we need to stop being so attached. If they’re good enough they’ll make it, if they aren’t, as it stands just being a ‘Chelsea Academy Graduate’ seems to be adding a premium to prices and we all benefit from that.

Casadei and KK to date.

The better question would be asking how many players we're stuck with that we won't be able to shift for a profit.

Well as @The Boehly Babes suggests, the only question is if the collective ends in a profit

I wrote about this in another thread (https://www.theshedend.com/topic/36907-qazs-chelsea-musings/page/2/#findComment-2120814)

But reposting and updating what I wrote then here.......

I asked Grok AI to estimate the sale prices of the following players (I think I said to use Transfermarkt and media speculation as references) and it said

Djordje Petrovic: €20.00m

Renato Veiga: €25.00m

Axel Disasi: €22.00m

Benoît Badiashile: €22.00m

Ben Chilwell: €15.00m

Caleb Wiley: €8.00m

Alfie Gilchrist: €8.00m

Lesley Ugochukwu: €18.00m

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: €20.00m

Christopher Nkunku: €35.00m

Raheem Sterling: €10.00m

João Félix: €20.00m

Armando Broja: €12.00m

David Datro Fofana: €6.00m

This was before the sale of Petrovic (for around 8 million euros more than estimated here) and Madueke (which I didn't even put in the list as I didn't have him listed as a "bomb squad" member) and the Jackson rumours took off (which could easily be another 50-60 million pounds if it goes through). Also Veiga is likely to go for closer to 40 million euro than the listed 25.

Remove Badiashile (whose probably staying subject to what happens with Hato and Guehi) and Caleb Wiley (whose going out on loan again) and both Ugochukwu and Dewsbury-Hall are very much 50/50 at this stage whether they stay/are loaned out or sold.

I don't have the currency converter nor the effort to do the math, but it could easily be in excess of 200 million euros in sales maybe even 300 million if we really go aggressive. Transmarkt already has us over 100 million in sales so far this window (see https://www.transfermarkt.com/fc-chelsea/alletransfers/verein/631)

I think we made a huge loss on the accidental junkie. We paid 60 million+ on him.

Sterling, Chillwell, Some goalkeepers, etc. We have a whole bunch of players on loan that are essentially losses. We are not going to make back the 20 million quid we paid for Kellyman ever are we?

Thing is buying/selling players is not as important as the overall portfolio and ticket sales and tv rights to a sports franchise.

I’d politely suggest Kellyman falls into the Joao Felix category of essentially a payday loan.

It was a purchase (that can be spread out over 5 years) to facilitate a sale that is registered as instant profit for that year.

The flipside of some of the loan players is their continuous loan fees will probably end up taking a big chunk out of the initial fee we paid.

Point stands on Sterling though I think that’s an absolute stinker, much like every single signing BlueCo made when it first came in. However they do seem to be righting that ship.

Transfer talk - Forbes seems to think our approach is flawed - but we won the World Cup since this article was published. Our American fan base is increasing and our American owners are happy
https://www.forbes.com/sites/zakgarnerpurkis/2025/06/30/the-massive-flaw-in-chelseas-wild-280-million-splurge/

Football clubs in the Premier League make their money primarily through ticket sales, broadcasting rights, sponsorship deals, and merchandise sales. Buying/Selling players rarely makes money - Brighton is an outlier in this - but generally it is not that crucial as long as it is within a range and the overall portfolio worth of the club is increasing and going upwards. Transfers sales and deals are a bigger issue for the fans who like to play 'fantasy' manager (or 'fantasy' Chelsea sporting director).

Indeed. We had some really random signings at the beginning. Blueco were just spending because they could. Mudryck was our biggest transfer disaster ever.

Or just don't sign the very obvious duds like Felix and Washington.

Im assuming there was something dodgy related to Felix

Washington i would love to know why we did it.

We will get some money back for Felix. There will most likely be a loss. Washington? doubtful we will get anything really.

Mudryck? The biggest waste of money in the history of Chelsea Football Club. €100 million with 'add ons' - although we are not dding on at this point. Still he was £70 million straight down the freaking toilet. He was the fastest player - but now we know how he achieved that. Why did we spend all that money on a player who had only played 29 games in the Ukraine??!?!?

Players on last year's loan army that still have to be loaned again or sold :

Chilwell, Gilchrist, Disasi, Veiga, Ugochukwu, Chukwuemeka, Matos, Sterling, Castledine, Felix, D.Fofana, Broja, Washington, Morgan, Merrick

Then we have our current first team squad of 32 players that will probably need reducing down to 25

I'd imagine we try to sell Jackson and Nkunku, and then loan Penders, Anselmino, Paez, Kellyman, and one of George or Guiu.

And if we sign any more new players then I guess it will have to be 1 in 1 out to keep the squad size manageable for Maresca

Don't worry. Younes and Yannick have it all sorted and, its still early in the window of course...with 3 of the 20 already completed!

I’d imagine the club will have a fairly comprehensive insurance policy that might provide some cover but I think we will look to sue the player for breach of contract if and when his ban and result of appeal are known.

Do you think he was fast because of the single dose meldonium on international duty?

Think Casadei was a break even - 15m Euros in and out. A small book profit given amortisation, but overall break even (assuming none or few of the adds on were hit)

14.86M purchase

13M sale (as per transfermarkt)

Amortisation is great for the accountancy nerds, quite simply we wasted two years of his and our own time.

Single dose?

Do you seriously believe that it was a single dose and not a full blown strategy and life style choice?

bless.

You think he wouldn't have been caught before that international break for a drug that stays in your system for so long?

It also has no correlation to someone's speed.

Mudryck is a junkie. He will get a ban of 4 years. It is very sweet the way that you think he is innocent.
