I am indeed a student... well, I'm just at college as a mature student and working part time, should be going to Uni next year at the ripe old age of 22. I do read, but I like lazing in front of the TV. In fact at the moment I have about three books on the go (short attention span, probably caused by the films). :blush:

If it helps, they are Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Inverting the Pyramid by Jonathan Wilson (book on the origin of football tactics), and an Introduction to Biomechanics.

I saw Machete (probably the only film created from a fake trailer) tonight. It's one of those films that you have to see without expecting things like great acting, great plot, great dialogue etc.

It's just a bit of fun. That is all.

Having said that, I still don't think it was that good.

And one thing that annoyed me was the fact that in the beginning of the film "the hero" gets to see his wife killed, have his daughter threatened and is left in a burning house.

Suddenly it's a few years later. No explanation of how he escaped, nor any information about his daughter. In fact, they don't mention her ever again. Guess they forgot her. It pi**ed me off.

The cast really is from the b-list, apart from Robert DeNiro of course (though seeing some of the later movies he's been in he's edging closer and closer to that b-list).

We get to see Danny Trejo, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, Jeff Fahey, Jessica Alba and Michelle Rodriguez.

Neither are really good.

But if you like full action with lots of blood then I guess it's worth seeing.

When you've read Brave New World, you might want to try Eyeless in Gaza. Also The Doors Of Perception, which is a series of essays describing his experimentation with mind-altering substances. Do you know Aldous Huxley briefly taught George Orwell?

Has anyone here seen "Mr. Nobody"...? It's been getting a lot of hype and as it's suppose to quite creative in how it mixes fantasy and reality(or so I've heard), it sounds like something I might want to see, but a bit sceptical about about Jared Leto being able to pull off a leading role like this.

I'm sure there are better works on the subject, but it's always less effort to watch a film, and I like many others living in the modern age am quite the lazy git.

Incidentally, I'm currently rewatching Children of Men, one of my all time favourite films, and it happens to be on ITV (one of my least favourite TV channels).

I'm afraid I'm with moi on this one. The original book Children of Men is so much better than the film I don't know where to begin.

I didn't know that, but it does make a lot of sense. Although I find that Huxley's ideas are more poignant, although once I've read it, I aim to read Brave New World Revisited, so it might be a while before I give those a go.

Yes, apparently Aldous Huxley genuinely believed that in years to come the government would be able to control the population by drugs/indoctrination techniques etc and that punishment and jail would be athing of the past!

It was actually this which got me wanting to read Brave New World.

It is of course just one way of interpreting the book, though. He could have meant things different to how they are, which is why I want to read Brave New World Revisited afterwards to get his explanation as to what exactly he meant... If only Nostradamus had a revisited book, it might make it a bit more obvious as to how far off he was.
