Lofty's Wall of Sound - What are you listening to?

Featured Replies

I heard he's planning on going on tour with Frank Turner and Chuck Ragan later this year. Chuck Ragan was great when he opened for The Gaslight Anthem in Helsinki last year. Actually... I enjoyed his performance much more than Gaslight Anthem's, who were quite mediocre.

Chuck Ragan supported Gaslight when I saw them too, he was really good. Don't understand why Gaslight were only mediocre though, seen them twice now and they've been incredible both times.

I prefer this Chuck Ragan song myself:

I've only seen them live once, so I couldn't really say if it was a normal night for them, but all my mates who were there agreed with me that they were disappointing. The energy that I expected just wasn't there and some of the faster and "punkier"(I'm not sure if that's a proper word) songs just sounded terrible(sloppy clunky wall of sound). It was the first time I've went to see a band and have left early, but it was a Tuesday night, I had to go to work next morning and there wasn't any sign of them improving, so me and my mates decided we've seen enough and left before the encore. Just a few weeks after that I went to see Soundtrack of Our Lives at the same club and they reminded me of what a great rock gig sounds like.

Videos just don't do them justice, but here's one:

Some good new stuff out there right now...The new Mogwai album has really blown me away though most reviews seem to think its not one of their best. I cant agree at all

Just heard of TLA the other day for the first time, saw them on avclub.com covering "Shot In the Arm" by Wilco, really digged the singer's voice.

And yeah, I was listening to a bunch of Death Cab earlier, hope that album is good!

Not to worry, I haven't heard any of these either!

I have a few albums on the go at the moment:

Only Revolutions by Biffy Clyro - not as good as their 2007 album, Puzzle, but it's still brilliant.

21st Century Breakdown by Green Day - need no explanation.

Brand New Eyes by Paramore - not as good as their 2007 album, Riot!, but still a good listen.

The '59 Sound by The Gaslight Anthem - I have to thank the people on here for this one, it's absolutely outstanding.

Kris Allen by, err, Kris Allen - the winner of American Idol *cringe*, but this is a good album with an acousticy feel

and finally:

Poetry of the Deed by Frank Turner - one of my favourite artists, probably of all time, and though I didn't like this album to start with, it's grown on me a lot and is really, really good!

Actually saw the mighty Frank and Gaslight play on the same bill down at Brightons Concorde club a couple of years back, needless to say it was a fantastic night.

For what its worth, try out an indie band Dogs (Jam / weller), and Detroit Social Club (Kasabian)

Harry Chapin sang a lot of "story" songs. There's a lovely one called Saturday Morning, but there doesn;t appear to be a Youtube of it, except for appalling covers
