Posted February 28, 201015 yr Controversial but one of the Sunday rags is daring to suggest we'll make a move for Reina if the scousers fail to make the Champions League. I know he's not well liked on here but personally I think he's a very good keeper. Would I want him here? Not if Cech continues to make the improvements we've seen from him in the last three games he played in however if he slips again then maybe I would.
February 28, 201015 yr Pepe Reina is quality, and no one can say otherwise. Would he come here to be a potential backup to Cech? Not on your life.
February 28, 201015 yr Pepe Reina is quality, and no one can say otherwise. Would he come here to be a potential backup to Cech? Not on your life. I agree, there is no way he would come here to be a back-up keeper, so if we would sign him it would be because Cech is on his way out.
February 28, 201015 yr He is a class goalie but no way he would join to be a back u. Also i doubt he would leave liverpool anyway as i cant see them letting him go. But if he wre to go i think it would only be back to spain
February 28, 201015 yr If we signed someone like Reina (or anyone of a similar stature) it wouldn't be as back up, it would be us saying Cech is no longer number one. No club would ever be able to have two keeper's of that ability and in that age bracket in the equad at the same time for any length of time. We shouldn't be looking to replace Cech but we should be thinking seriously about a better quality back up keeper. As was mentioned in a different thread we probably have to be looking for someone in their 30s who is happy to be 2nd choice but is more reliable and consistent that Hilario.
February 28, 201015 yr Like Jasskilanean or Sorenson, if they were willing to come here? I would take either in a heartbeat as a backup.
February 28, 201015 yr Unless they were just digging for gold why would they want to be back up keepers?
February 28, 201015 yr More money, plain and simple. In the States, it happens all of the times in baseball, basketball, and (U.S.-style) football.
February 28, 201015 yr Doesn't happen much with goalkeepers Phillip because ultimately footballers want some playing time. Outfield players sometimes do it because they feel there is a greater chance of getting some playing time however back up goalkeepers sit around all season hoping for an nijury to the first choice keeper! The likes of Jasseklainen and Sorensen are on good money and playing week in week out. They won't give that up for an extra £20k a week
February 28, 201015 yr Everyone knows Schwarzer is the best keeper in the EPL ;) No...but seriously, he is good...however he turned down Juve and Bayern to join Fulham because he wanted first team football. And he is old....
February 28, 201015 yr I like Scwartzer and Friedel, but neither one is likely to move from their current clubs.
February 28, 201015 yr Everyone knows Schwarzer is the best keeper in the EPL ;)No...but seriously, he is good...however he turned down Juve and Bayern to join Fulham because he wanted first team football. And he is old.... Yes indeed. He is quality. However, I'm sure I read somewhere when he completed his move to Fulham that it was only because he wanted a better lifestyle and more moolah before he hung up his boots and hence, he chose London. I don't see much of a need for a new back up as long as Turnbull improves his game and Hilario maintains his general level of performances. And we still have Delac coming in at some point of time. And the likes of Sabek in the youth and the reserves. Hilario may not be the best 2nd choice goalkeeper in the EPL, however, Taylor, Cudicini or Guzan is about as good as it gets when it comes to that position. Hilario isn't way off from their quality and not every team boasts of such players.
February 28, 201015 yr Pepe Reina is quality, and no one can say otherwise. Would he come here to be a potential backup to Cech? Not on your life. Controversially, I would have Reina IN FRONT of Petr Cech. Sorry, but his form has been slipping for some time.
February 28, 201015 yr Author Controversially, I would have Reina IN FRONT of Petr Cech. Sorry, but his form has been slipping for some time. And that's exactly where I'm coming from. Petr has been showing signs of improving but should he revert back to his earlier season form when he comes back from injury then I think we would need to seriously consider his 'right' to be the number one choice.
February 28, 201015 yr What about Joe Hart? If we got him and used him in exactly the same circumstances that Geezer is suggesting, I think he would be a great asset. Not sure Citeh would sell, especially to us though.
February 28, 201015 yr What about Joe Hart? If we got him and used him in exactly the same circumstances that Geezer is suggesting, I think he would be a great asset. Not sure Citeh would sell, especially to us though. Theres no way city would let us have him as he is being groomed by him. Personally i think Scott Loach at Watford or Kieran Westwood at Coventry would be IDEAL. Both young so will realise they are going to be back ups to eventually be a successor to Cech, however, also good enough to come into the team when necessary (early rounds of cups, injuries etc).
February 28, 201015 yr We already have young keepers with aspirations to take over from Cech at some later stage (Sebek probably being the most hopeful). What we need is a back up keeper who the back four can have confidence in and I don't think either Hilario or Turnbull is the answer. I wouldn't be opposed to having a look at Neil Alexander (currently at Rangers). He is 31 and clearly happy to play 2nd fiddle but when he is called upon he is consistent and plays with a decent amount of confidence and command of his area.
February 28, 201015 yr Chelsea target Atletico keeper The Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo is having a nightmare after being the La Liga side`s most expensive signing of the summer. The responsibility has proven way too much for the 20-year-old Spanish stopper. He`s had a shambolic defence in front of him at times, he`s made mistakes and two of the three managers Atletico have had this season have benched him in place of the more level headed De Gea - a 19 year old future Spanish number one who almost signed for Wigan this season. Asenjo, however, caught the eye of Chelsea while putting in some fantastic performances for Valladolid last term and have offered him a way out: the Premier league club are negotiating with the player and, if they can reach an agreement, Atletico will let him go. Dunno if this is any from if this is any way reliable but according to guilliem balague this is the case

Dunno if this is any from if this is any way reliable but according to guilliem balague this is the case That made me laugh if you translate that it basically means Athletico have had a nightmare with their record signing, he's awful. Due to a non-existent defence and several manager changes he has nore confidence. Hes been dropped many times for his poor performance to a goalie even less experienced. But no need to fear Athletico fans, Chelsea will buy him. Seriously though cant see that happening at all But i really do think Kieran Westwood would be a great buy. I have a Cov mate who says he is so highly rated up there. Even if we have got other youngsters, a little competition never hurt anyone.
February 28, 201015 yr Not going to happen, considering the history between the two clubs, they will charge us 40M for him and Cech in return. We dont really have a plan for the GK situation. Cuddicini was let go because he was never given a game. Hilario only played when Cech was injured for the last 3 years. We got Turnbull, who has at least a year of top league experience under his belt, yet he is the 3rd choice GK :) I think we need to ship Hilario out ASAP whn eht season is over. Turnbull should play all the league and FA cup matches from next season, and the occasional league/CL matches. The 3rd choice ( assume a young lad) will get a game or two per season. Look at Man United, they have 3 good GKs, and they manage to rotate them through the season. Foster is no great GK, but compare to Hilario he is like GOD.
March 1, 201015 yr Foster is no great GK, but compare to Hilario he is like GOD. You're kidding right? The next thing you'll say, Almunia is the best goalkeeper the Premier League has ever had.
March 1, 201015 yr It's amazing, Reina yes is a fantastic keeper and in my opinion the best in the league. However before Cech got injured everyone was happy with Hilario and everyone said he's a top quality back up keeper to have. Man City game in my opinion he was at fault for 1 of the goals and that was the Bellemy goal but it was still a fantastic finish, the first goal had arguably the 2 best defenders in the league on Tevez and they of should of dealt with him before he even got to Hilaro. Fact is, he's not going to come in to the game and be outstanding simply because he's the back up and he has verry little first team football. Look how many errors Foster made, look at how many errors Fabianski made when they replaced Almunia and Van der saar. You very rarely get a young keeper back up come through and shine, if so he's touted as the next big thing and a replacement for the current international goalkeeper, you just don't see it in the EPL that much. Im confident if Hilario is given a game or two he will become consistant, but the whole team needs to perform to take the pressure off him. Just be greatful that we haven't got Peter Enkleman as our back up Goalkeeper.
March 1, 201015 yr Reina is the best goalkeeper in the league at the moment, by quite some way. Liverpool won't sell him and I can't really see us going out of our way to try and sign him anyway - Cech is just as good when on top form, if not better, so it'd be impossible to keep both keepers happy.
March 1, 201015 yr Yeah I agree with most, I would love Reina but cant see it happening. Whats this Turnbull like? Didnt he play against Nicosia this year and make a few blunders? I thought when he was at Boro he was ok so would be an alright backup for Cech
March 1, 201015 yr Reina is not needed. He is good but older than Cech and we have many good goalkeeping prospects in the reserves. I'd like to see Matec Delac play sometime.
