He was underrated Bluehaze! 😁 To me it showed what a travesty it was getting relegated the gulf between us and clubs like Walsall was huge we could have had double figures that day. I hated that season to be honest I thought I'd left going to places like Walsall behind in 1984. The hangover from the Boro game lasted until we beat Leeds 2-0 and then it was pretty much a cakewalk City away was a good day and that was it.

That was the early days of supporting for me and I was amazed as the season progressed after beating City and Leeds that at times though we did not play well we still normally won.

After the years of being totally sh*t through my childhood, 1984 seemed we had arrived, to be relegated in 1988 it just seemed what the f**k has happened, the 88/89 promotion was never the same as the earlier one, one thing I will say is, has a better team ever been relegated!

John hollins and Ernie Walley were the problem. There were issues with Spackman and Speedie which led to them leaving. Micky T already gone then Pat going the season we went down. After 85/86 we didn’t bring in the right players to keep us up. We also had poor fullbacks for the top division.

Don't think Clarke, Dorigo and Clive Wilson were poor although Rougvie, Millar, Wood, Dublin, Hall definitely were.
February 18, 20215 yr I was just looking at the 86-87 season our crowds were really shocking but we weren't alone 33,000 against MU , 28,000 against Spurs, 32,000 against Arsenal, 17,000 against Villa, 10.000 against Leicester, 25,000 against Liverpool, 19,000 against City, 21,000 against Newcastle considering we brought good numbers to these games seems crowds were massively down everywhere I didn't realise how much.

Think it was the aftermath of the Bradford/Heysel/Bham disasters in 85 add trouble at our Sunderland game & Millwall at Luton the same season, gates dropped then & carried on the following season for most clubs. Near the end of the season in 86 likes of Spurs at their peak got 8/9/10,000 at a few home games only two years after winning the Uefa cup.

Yes Luton Millwall the old bill getting run across the pitch was shocking for non football fans and the catalyst for Thatcher's operation own goal.

Crowds started to get bigger again and Football in General became more fashionable due to Italia 90 I believe, then with new family friendly grounds and euro 96 and Sky and premier league, football became for the masses, football shirt wearing men who 10 years before would call it soccer, and normally went to Rugby and the theatre started turning up, thankfully that has died down now, don’t see many replica shirts at the Bridge these days, The Emirates seems to be the main place the Rugby/theatre crowd go.

Arsenal had more new fans then anyone in the 90's. Football started getting popular and I'm sure these geezers in their 30's felt left out of conversations at the pub and at work so they had to start supporting a team and they chose Arsenal. Me and a mate where going to go to Blackburn not sure of the year had a look at the times of the trains because of engineering works we wouldn't have made kick off and a train leaving at half eight got in later then the one leaving at half ten.

Basically football started to lose its soul. By 2002 I'd had enough and haven't been since. Mind you it's a bit difficult now as it's an 8000 mile round trip for me!
