September 12, 20196 yr Now this is a Vintage Chelsea Programme and very poignant. This match was our first home game of 1914/15. On Sat 12th Sept 1914. in front of 14,000 spectators,we lost to Newcastle Utd 3-0 at The Bridge. Just across the English Channel, the conflict that became World War 1 was in its early stages. Less we forget. @erskblue Thanks for posting the pictures of the old programmes and chronicles. They are great ways of showing the club's history. Combines two of my great loves: Chelsea and history. Seeing pictures of WW1 programmes reminds me of accounts I've read and watched about the pressure on football authorities, clubs and players to stop playing whilst the war was on and for fans and players to sign up to the military. Other sports e.g. both codes of rugby pointed out to football clubs that their players, fans etc had signed-up. Football fans and players eventually did their bit. Hearts lost a lot of players in WW1 and I think that there was recently a play in Edinburgh about the Hearts players who lost their lives.
