They have changed the name of the advertiser's cup again, it will be called the Capital One Cup next year...

Finance firm Capital One has replaced Carling as sponsor of the League Cup.

Lager giant Carling has sponsored the tournament, which was won by Liverpool last season, for the past nine years.

Nottingham-based Capital One has signed a four-year deal with the Football League to front the contest for an undisclosed fee.

I've never known it when it wasn't the Carling Cup, but I think I will only be referring to it as the League Cup from now on. Will get hard to break the habit of typing "CC" when referencing the League Cup.

I never understood why they have the League Cup. The FA Cup serves the purpose of a domestic tournament already.

Because the FA earn revenue from their cup and the Football league earn revenue from theirs! Simples!

I see... all about the almighty dollar. guess it does serve a purpose in giving young players some in game experience.

Years ago the LEAGUE CUP meant something . All these name changes do not send a prestigeous message, and in my opinion, have devalued being in it..Winning the LEAGUE CUP sounds good..Winning the Capital one cup (apologies to my credit card company) makes it sound uber mickey mouse..The FA CUP is going that way fast..I realise the scenario of cash imput is tantamount, but lets hope the EUROPEAN CUP is not changed one day to something equally pissing me offish

The League Cup was introduced in the 1960/61 season, but many top teams chose not to take part. This can be seen by some of the early finals (played over two legs back then)...

60/61 - Aston Villa 3 Rotherham Utd 2

61/62 - Norwich 4 Rochdale 0

62/63 - Birmingham 3 Aston Villa 1

63/64 - Leicester 4 Stoke 3

64/65 - Chelsea 3 Leicester 2

65/66 - WBA 5 West Ham 3

After winning the trophy in 64/65, Chelsea chose not to defend it as we were taking part in the Fairs Cup.

From 66/67 onwards the final was played at Wembley, with that years trophy going to third division QPR. Two years later Swindon beat Arsenal in the final (loved watching that!)

I think all the sponsors have been mentioned already, but here's a list

1960-1982 - no main sponsor

1982-1986 - Milk Cup

1986-1990 - Littlewoods Challenge Cup

1990-1992 - Rumbelows Cup

1992-1998 - Coca-Cola Cup

1998-2003 - Worthington Cup

2003-2012 - Carling Cup

2012-2016 - Capital One Cup

I've hated all those names from day one, and only ever call it the League Cup.

I've always liked the league cup. First opportunity to pick up tournament silverware in the season. It's sad that none of the top teams take it seriously, but hey-ho

The Milk Cup?

Dairy Crest (The processing part of Milk Marketing Board) sponsored it and thats why it was called The Milk Cup.

Dairy Crest also sponsored British athletics in 1980s. Although their big meetings were called The Dairy Crest Games.

Should always be called the League Cup but the top 6 in the PL should be disqualified from entering the following season.....oh I forgot Liverpool would still be playing for it :laugh2:
