Star
It seems pretty clear to me that the targets AVB put in place during his time here are still dictating our moves in the market - given he has Modric as bait and clear direction to make tweaks to the Spurs line up if I was Chelsea I would steer well clear of making another 40 million bid for the player. AVB wanted Hulk and Moutinho at Chelsea, along with Hazard I am sure of it. Moutinho will be great asset for Spurs but AVB knows Porto will hold out for 30 million plus, the more money he gets for Modric the better. 'Oscar' is a player along with Lucas he mentioned in interviews as Chelsea Manager. Last season we got wind of the Arsenal approach for Mata and moved in, my hunch this is why we made our move for Oscar as AVB wants him at Spurs. I know we held talks with Wolves over Jarvis, also with Wigan over Moses. Fellani no thanks, but the Belguim kid Witsel is a damn good player. Robbie likes 4-2-3-1 Torres looks likes the main main up front - Hazard , Mata and Oscar is mouthwatering, think it will be Hulk or Schurie not both. But we should NOT be going back in for Modric. Guest RFC_CFC
We are the only club who would pay €40 million for him so I too hope we stay clear at that price. He basically was using Modric as bait today all but confirming he is for sale to the highest bidder, we should try and tie up Hulk and Oscar while a new RB would be useful too. Englishman
I think it is either a coincidence or these are players that were originally targeted by emenalo et al. I think this is more likely. Transfers seem to be decided from above by Roman/Emenalo/whoever and these are pursued irrespective of who the manager is. Modric was already a target when Carlo was manager. Hulk is another who has been repeatedly linked with us over the years. Look at the players signed under AVB: DeBruyne and Lukaku certainly weren't his signings and Cahill probably wasn't his either. mad_mac
Agree with G on this one, the manager is merely the mouthpiece of whomever is making the decisinos behind the scene. Had we a different manager in, I bet most, if not all, the same names would be coming up. However, I am sure a manager will mention a few targets (such as Moutinho) that the board may then take a look into.
Katon
The manager probably does have some input, though. We saw last season that Robbie likes wingers who can track back (which is why, when we finally won the CL, Solomon Kalou was a regular starter), and after he was put in place permanently the Hulk rumours started dying down and Schurrle - who, from the profiles I've seen, is a more defensively useful player - started cropping up a lot. So the manager's preferences do have an impact on which players we target, but on the other hand half the point of having a director of football is to let the club have a vaguely consistent transfer policy when we're sacking managers every five minutes, so it's not astonishing that we're interested in a lot of the same players we were last year. Star
Think most people will be happy Bosingwa, Kalou and fingers crossed Malouda are not playing for us next season. Probably worth ten points for a start !

Probably worth ten points for a start ! I agree with you for the most part, but I hope Kalou and especially Bosingwa get kind of a cult status in the future due to their performances in the CL semis and final. If you came up to me last August and said Chelsea are going to win the CL this year with a starting lineup that has Bosingwa, Cahill, Bertrand, Kalou and Mikel, I would've slapped you in the face! Uno
To be fair to the guy, thats all the journo's keep asking him about. Of course he could just say no comment or lets all move on from this but it must get on your tits being asked the same thing over and over again. Star
Whilst I agree Jarvis is not 'Chelsea class' we do need to increase the English homegrown levels in our squad. If Theo Walxott was available at 15 million as reports suggest - he would fit the bill as an impact player then maybe we could put the Hulk money to better use. Star
Personally I feel AVB is again out of his depth, following Uncle Harry is 'one step beyond' Typically the press are focusing on his poor treatment by Chelsea. Funny also the hacks a year on make no mention of his age and the fact Spurs have a few ego's of their own. I will make a bold prediction Spuds will again win nothing this season and also will finish outside the top four.

For me any penny we spent on Walcott would be wasted money because we would buying him to play predominantly on the right which, despite Wenger's desperate desire to prove otherwise, is not his best position. DoubleHelix74
AVB still has not learnt when to shut up... Well it seems be hasn't quite learn the lesson he should have last season. First fining Modric two weeks worth of pay for not practicing Friday. And now Mordic skipped the US tour and wants out completley. AVB still cannot shut up about it stating that Levy is very angry with the player. This sitaluation is just gonna get worse and what AVB fails to realize is that he is fanning the flames with his big mouth. The man likes to hear himself speak. He's a Ferguson without the accomplishments! As somebody already stated, he is again in over his head... And it appears he is making the same mistakes all over again. The Anelka situation comes to mind. But he's not our concern and thankfully we have a manager who puts Club before his own desires.
dkw
Its quite funny him saying Modric is making a mistake wanting to leave for a bigger club, 12 months ago he was saying exactly the opposite and wanted spurs to let him go to a bigger club.....daft sod.
