New Striker. With 'Left Over' Mata money

Featured Replies

Sorry if this has been posted but Im new here. Been supporting CFC Since the 2002 Fa Cup Final.
What with the impending money we will recieve for Mata ( I am so dissapointed , but it was 37m on the bench not being used, and Oscar is an adequate replacement with tonnes more potential), we would have some money left over. I know we made a loss but I assume we would only sell as so to get some decent money.
What strikers would be out there in January? I believe we need just a world class striker, but they are hard to come by. Would Diego Costa be available without using Coutious as a makeweight.
Jackson Martinez.?
Sorry again if this has been posted but Im new here.
Cheers

Welcome.

A new striker in Jan won't happen, we need to clear the decks and that means shipping out Ba and waving goodbye to Eto'o at the end of the season.

A marquee striker along the lines of Costa would be fab but we have Lukaku to consider as well, and marquee + Lukaku + Torres isn't a viable option.

nothing on the striker front will happen until the summer now. Eto and Ba will go and our strike force next season will be Lukaku, Torres and a big name signing who has a great world cup

I personally can't see us signing a big name striker and keeping Torres. Their wages would be astronomical for one thing and also Torres won't be happy playing second fiddle. He wants to be the main man.

Realistically we should buy a big name striker and get Lukaku back as back up, keep either Eto'o or Ba, sell one of the them along with Torres.

Welcome to the forum mate!

Hmmm, I don't know about the striker situation tbh. We have sold two players that could feature in the CL for 2 new players that can't.

We could seriously end up diluting our CL squad by possibly selling Ba and bring in another cup tied face.

The only two not cup tied that are good enough are Falcao (now crocked) and Suarez (we would need to have sold mata for 80 mill)

Unless I have missed anyone?

I think it's going to be Diego Costa.

Torres will go the other way and we'll throw some cash into the package as well.

Makes little sense for Atheltico to sell us Costa at this stage when they're clearly in contention for the La Liga top-spot.

They wouldn't have much choice with a reported £32m buy-out clause in his contract. Did anybody watch Diego Costa today when Atletico played Bilbao?

I must say, he didn't set me on fire. There were some good flashes but that was about it. The commentators did say that his early goal scoring form has worn off recently. Still, I shouldn't judge a player on one game.

Don't think there are enough left over to sign a good striker. As many have said, won't be the next few days. I hope a feeling Jose already has a plan, just needs to get through this season with what we have got.

Hey Huttsey,

As someone who has watched quite a few Atletico games this season, the prospect of signing Diego Costa makes me feel less sorry for myself about losing Mata. He may not have been on fire tonight, but I think he could be just what we need. He's big, strong, clinical (had the best conversion rate in Europe upto the xmas break), and you can see how passionate he is when he's on the pitch. He's not Drogba, but he's not hugely dissimmilar + only 25 years old.

I've probably put him on a bit of a pedastal, but I really think he'd be a phenomenal signing.
