Losing..

Featured Replies

So I was at work yesterday and only heard the result when I got home and stuck SSN on. I shouted 'bollox' and turned it off. I came onto this forum read a few posts made a couple of my own and left it at that. Didn't read any internet, didn't watch SSN again and certainly didn't watch MOTD. It's how I dealt with a bad day for me as a Chelsea fan.

I've read a few more posts today and seen some full of emotion, reaction posts, and some more considered. The best post who to my shame I can't remember who wrote it was 'we need to learn how to lose better'. Not that losing is good or should be just swept under the carpet, there are questions to be asked and answered.

I may sound full of cliches, but sometimes you don't get what you deserve, sometimes you get what you don't deserve. We can blame this player that player, this ref, the media, the manager. Sometimes it just does not go for you for whatever reason, you have to take it on the chin, be gracious and move on. Yes, decisions change games, decisions by players, by the manager, by refs, but it's an equal playing field for all teams taking the field.

Being f**king upset and angry is not a bad thing, being emotional and wanting to scream and shout is not a bad thing, in fact it's a good thing, it's what the passion and love that we have for our club makes us do, without it you might as well be watching a game of tiddlywinks. But the blame game just doesn't do it for me, turning on our own doesn't do it for me.

So to whoever said 'we need to learn how to lose better' , I doff my cap to you because I am most certainly with you on that.

Fantastic post, and your bang on about that learning to lose thing. The problem is we now have an group of supporters who have only known success and find defeat hard to take. Thats not a dig at them as its just the situation, the same as a generation of Liverpool and utd fans once were. Us older ones enjoy the victories but handle the defeats as were much more used to it. Its a bit of a generalisation I know, and obviously not all fans conform to it.

Your right we do need to take defeats abit better but due to work reasons you didn't watch the game most of us did and it was emotional disappointing and upsetting so maybe if you saw it you would feel the same as some of is here. Personally I'm over it we just didn't put in a good enough performance. The ref was poor but that's no excuse. I take your point all the same.

Learning to lose better is all well and good as long as the lesson has been learned. The defeats in the premier league this year have all followed a similar pattern something our coaching staff need to address next year if we are to sustain a worthwhile challenge.

Good thread, and good first post to start it off, but I also think the football club as a whole (including Mourinho) need to lose better and learn lessons from defeats.

It not just us fans on forums who are guilty.

Went to my first Chelsea game in 1981. It's fair to say I have a reasonable bit of experience watching us lose. Hand on heart though I still have to say that there are times when I struggle to be objective about matches/our performances/etc in the immediate aftermath of a defeat. Usually takes me until the following day tbh. (And watching many games, as I do, in my local, sobering up may play a small part it that!!,.... ::ChELSeAFaN::  :drinks:  :coffee: )

Agreed. Some of the posts I've read here this morning are shockers. Normal talk of bias and agendas. Was the same at the game yesterday, it really was very spiteful around where I was sitting. For me Rui Faras behaviour was unacceptable and didn't help either, it's great to show passion but only if you keep your dignity.

Wasn't a good day for the club yesterday on quite a few levels.

I agree he acts like a child sometimes

I admit that because I have so many friends who support Liverpool and are revelling in this title charge, I'm finding losing to be far more abhorrent than normal. Their gloating is becoming my worse nightmare! These things I normally take in my stride, plus I did not believe at the start that we had the squad to win the title.

In hindsight, it's nice to be back in a title challenge again, it's been a while. I'm afraid though that I'm going to have to suck this all up and give my mates their moment of glory. I'll be in the pub next week with them all to watch the match and if we're beaten I'll shake their hands and wish them all a 'well done'.

A Champions League win would certainly make my year better!

I don't want to sound like the forum grandad on here but I've looked at us blaming everyone else, and then taking it out on players constantly.

Does this sound like another club who we berate on here ?

Have your moans and screams, but look at where we are in comparison to last season, look at who we are.

We have areas that need improvement, absolutely, if next season we still make a balls of it, come back at me and I'll bow down.

So spot on Carlo. So spot on.

One of my biggest gripes here is the fascination with RAWK (or similar) and the amount of quotes or links that we see from it. It's an obsession for some.

I assure you somewhere on the web this morning there is a rivals forum that is quoting a post made on here in the last 16 hours and those fans are having a right old laugh about it and at us in general.

i think that is part of being a fan , not only do we like to see our own team do well but also enjoy the pain our rivals suffer within a defeat. This has intensified over the last 15 yrs as our media outlets has increased.

I understand that and agree to a certain extent. But I think it's worth pointing out that some of the ludicrous stuff you see on here just makes us look silly when there are endless mocking quotes from RAWK and Bluemoon or whatever. We all hate to lose but it's important not to be too precious and try and uphold at least a shred of dignity! Coming out and saying 'the FA clearly won't let us win the league' when we have just lost a match where we had 31 attempts is plain daft.

I'm a bad loser, I wont ever change.Mike Dean is a complete c**t and I hope Liverpool loose all their remaining games.

Ha ha, outstanding.

I'm not for all the knee-jerking, but also think that if you show me a good loser, then the chances are that they're losers generally.

There's a time for grace, dignity and all that nice stuff. Yesterday wasn't that time, if you say nothing, then nothing will change and there are things going on in areas outside of the football club that need change. The fellas who sit near me, all called how the refs performance would be. Unfortunately we gave him the chance, with a poorish performance for his and his assistants decisions to have an effect.

Good on Jose for saying all he needed to without a direct being directly critical, he'll possibly get called up in front of the FA to "explain his comments".

Rui might be in big trouble though.

I think it's unfortunate that the people who would benefit the most from reading this thread are unlikely to see it as they tend to appear exclusively in match threads, more often when we are losing or are struggling to break down a stubborn defensive team. Alternatively, if there isn't a match going on, we have people scouring the internet looking for other things to get worked up about, for example perceived anti-Chelsea (or pro-Liverpool) bias in the media. It seems to me that there is a subsection of our support who aren't happy unless they have something to complain about. In real life I'd just avoid talking to people like this, but a forum like this gives everybody a voice (for better and worse).

With regards to the match yesterday, I wasn't too angry with the referee. He made a several important mistakes and both sides have reasons to be feel aggrieved, I don't think he was prejudiced against either side and I find suggestions that the referee was chosen by the FA to engineer a Liverpool premier league title ludicrous. Yesterday's match left me with a strong feeling of deja-vu, how many times have we lost or drawn games against weaker teams who set out to stop us playing? We can scape-goat the officials again but they are only human beings and fallible so we will have more days like yesterday unless we can figure out how to stop putting ourselves in that position.

As for the league, whoever wins it now will have deserved it. Say what you want about Liverpool and their fans (who I don't believe are any better or worse than any other team), they have played some good exciting football this season with a core of English players and a young British manager so if they win the title then it's to their credit and there will be no bitterness from me.

Rui might be in big trouble though.

And so he should be.

His conduct was embarrassing and just added more stress and pressure onto the players and crowd.

Agree about the players bit, when they saw that all it would do is wind them up more and lose concentration.

We didn't win it this season, gutted but we can start again next season. But if you where to look at that another way...

Say if we didn't win it next season, that would be five years without a title, we have already gone four years without one, with the money we have spent that is not very good. So I think we have to win it next season, otherwise it could become a dilemma if we went 5 years without winning the league with the money we have spent, that just doesn't look very nice at all.
