Chelsea Appeal Matic Red Card

Featured Replies

Sky are reporting that we will appeal the Matic red card, I've got to say I love the togetherness of the club at the moment backing Jose, backing Diego & now Matic as well.

I don't have much confidence of it being overturned but still a great show of commitment to our players from the club.

I'm hopeful and hope action will be taken against Barnes.

Be interesting to see the outcome considering the overwhelming support in the meeja from ex-pros and journalists alike to this incident. Personally I think the FA will take the stance that no matter what, you can't react like that to provocation but I live in hope.

Has the FA ever been under so much scrutiny or pressure? Long overdue I think and Jose said it yesterday, something like people not in football making decisions about football.

totally agree, they'll say that regardless of what happens before they can't allow players to react without any punishment.  That in my opinion completely overlooks the fact that even footballers are human and I don't believe they'll consider the fact that he was well within his rights to spank Barnes into next week for the challenge he put in - whereas all he done was to push him in the back.

The support has mostly been that Atkinson failed to see or send off Barnes for his numerous poor challenges and coupled with failing to award 2 penalties I think a lot of the out cry has been about the overall poor quality of his performance and it's pretty much unacceptable for a Premier League referee to be making that many mistakes in one game.

With regards to Matic I think it's split, there is a lot of understanding about why he reacted the way he did but I've seen a fair few comments saying he deserved to go because of it's against the rules.

There seem to be an argument about it being below the neck so a red card was possibly excessive but I'm not sure, I've never heard that rule before.

Not sure the FA can take Barnes reckless challenge into account when reviewing the incident as I'm not sure appeals are contextual?

Basically I think he'll be very lucky to have the card rescinded and I'd be curious to see on what grounds Chelsea are appealing the sending off.

Isnt the argument always "You cant raise your hands to another player".

If he gets off I'll be amazed, I dont have much faith in the FA.

Barnes will be banned though.

That's what I thought.

The fact he chased him down as the ref whistled too is adding to it so it won't be recinded.

On Barnes I have a feeling nothing will be done.

The FA is an institution run by overpaid, spineless outdated individuals who I doubt have ever stepped foot on a football pitch in the last 20 years so I dont expect any level of empathy for Matics reaction.

I cant believe that referees such as Martin Atkinson can get away with incompetence week after week without any action yet any manager who voices an opinion is fined on the spot. It is as clear as daylight that teams such as City and Liverpool seem to get decisions in their favour continuously and this season alone we have dropped 7 points minimum due to incompetent refereeing.

Absolutely ridiculous!!

I think the key issue that may be part of the evidence is that Barnes should have been carded well before the Matic incident. Had he still chopped Matic his leaving the pitch may not have caused as much frustration from our players.

I doubt very much it will be overturned,.

Though it's interesting to read comments from a number of referees saying that the rule states that a shove/push where the impact is below the neck is only a yellow.

Matic should to a Roy Keane on the c**t if he ever plays against him again.

No thanks.

Matic aint a thug and actually has ability as a footballer unlike Barnes so does not need to sink to such depths.

I understand the frustration though but the best way to deal with this is to win our next meeting (if there is one, hopefully not) or holding the EPL title aloft while laughing at Barnes as he prepares for a year in the championship.

The ref didn't book Barnes so the FA have to view that as it was not seen properly, and so a ban will have to happen.

Webb brought it up when he was on MNF with Neville and Carragher. Obviously it's his interpretation more than in the rules itself which is why I doubt it'll be rescinded.

Matic lost his head but I don't think that's going to be taken as mitigating circumstances. He's only human and it was in the heat of the moment but I can't pretend I'm not disappointed in him a little.

Ultimately we're all responsible for what we do, although extenuating circumstances can come into it. But right now we have a 5 point lead and a cup final, and our most important player has got himself sent off and banned for them. That may cost us both next week and the end of the season.

I'm sure I read someone say as it wasn't 'off the ball' then they won't take action?

Not sure if that's the case at all though.

What the FA need to realise is that players are human and the reaction was one which was only natural after the attrocious tackle from Barnes. If common sense is applied than I believe the decision will be overturned however unfortunately common sense is not all that common when it comes to the FA

Wonder when we will find out

It'll obviously be before the cup final, we have until 1pm tomorrow to submit evidence and so I would imagine there would be a decision late on Thursday at a guess.
