Chelsea suffer most abuse from social media trolls

Abuse on social media is regularly in the headlines.

And it won't surprise many to learn that footballers and football teams are often targeted by internet trolls.

But just how much do they come under fire? Anti-discrimination group Kick It Out has endeavoured to find out.

How bad is it?

According to Kick It Out's study, there have been an estimated 134,400 discriminatory posts this season.

That equates to:

  • 16,800 discriminatory posts a month
  • 551 of them per day
  • 1 abusive mention every 2.6 minutes

Doesnt surprise me. If you think about it, we have the:

- Controversial owner

- Overnight Success since being took over

- Outspoken manager who people divides opinion

- Controversial Club Captain

- Most successful club over the past decade

I wonder how they get this data, and if its in anyway accurate. They mention forums, I cant understand how they can get any real numbers when trolls post, they get banned, thread gets burned etc.

Had it for coming on for 15 years now. The trolls will always find sticks to beat us with, it used to really bother me, couldn't give a sh*t now.

In fact the 'seige' mentality makes the triumphs even sweeter!

f**k em all....

Always going to get people who are brave behind a keyboard but wouldn't have the balls to say the same stuff in the real world. Really doesn't bother me in the slightest to be honest.

It would bother me if my wife and children were threatened with rape and it most certainly bothers me when that happens to others, even if I don't know them in real life.

You love banging that drum dont you? You must think you are such a hard man hah.

Were you bullied at school?

I've been trying to fathom the root cause also.

What drum? That some cowardly people say stuff on the internet that they wouldn't say in person? I've always thought that to be true. So much of the stuff on social media wouldn't get said at a football match so is that not correct?

No I'm not a hard man, I simply don't say stuff on the internet I wouldn't say in person. Always thought that was a good thing. Not quite sure why you're going down this road to be honest.

The research is besides the point here.

We've all heard your point on whether people would be "brave enough to say these things to my face" etc. Everyone is entitled to their opinions.... just no need to continually make said point really.

The drum of continually making the same point, in every thread where possible.

The person who set up the thread, 'who is fed up with Blue Daze...' (you know who you are). I humbly and openly apologise for suggesting it was unfair, you were way ahead of us.

It's not about being 'brave' because there's nothing to be brave about is there? It's about treating fellow supporters the way you would if you were at the Bridge or in the pub.

That's the issue here for a lot of people, that there's a disconnect between the way 'supporters' act online and the way they conduct themselves at football matches.

It's like when you questioned whether I was a supporter - would you have done the same from your seat in the Shed? Would these people abusing people on Twitter do the same? The answer to me is quite clearly no.

You sound like you haven't grasped the Internet yet. It's the way it's been and always will be, whether you like it or not, it will never change. No point grumbling about it.

Not sure how helpful that program was, but I guess the early broadcast time restricted it somewhat.

Yeah we didn't learn anything really ! Ah well
