Freebies: Summer 2015

Recommended Posts

List of players available on a free this summer, according to transfermarkt.com.

There are some interesting ones here. Noticed there's no Micah Richards (Someone I'd like as cover for Iva at RB and at CB).

One or two of these frees could mean more chance to splash out big on the Pogba, Varane, Bale, Reus category of players.

Defence - Ronochia?

Midfield - khedira? Yakob? Mulumbu? De Jong? Milner?

Wing - Konoplyanka?

Strike - Luiz Adriano? Ings?

Luiz Adriano contract ends in december i think.

It might sound silly, But i would take a few of them, Milner, De Jong, Konoplyanka and possibly Khedira but he seems injury prone.

Konoplyanka would allow Hazard to go central a lot of the times, Milner can play pretty much across the midfield and De Jong would be perfect cover for Matic.

I like Danny Ings. He's managed 10 goals in an absolutely terrible Burnley team and is only 22. Wouldn't mind having him as third choice here with Bamford going out on loan. Even if we sell him on, we could get a decent fee for him I reckon.

I don't think they're worth it tbh. Yes they may be free but their wage bills will be a waste. Also they'll likely take up valuable squad positions which I would much rather give to people like RLC or Bamford. Plus most of them would struggle to get on our bench except maybe Khedira.

Wouldn't say no to De Jong if we aren't willing to give our youth a chance, still one of the best DM's in the world. Milner is a top player and I like him a lot, the fact that he can literally play anywhere makes is very hard to turn him down but I think we have enough players like him in the squad. Plus I'm sure he would want to be playing more regularly anyway, hence the Liverpool link.

Agree, they are good but Im much more inclined to give youth a chance to full up some of the squad roles instead of De jong or milner

Unless he fancies a stint as Stamford The Lion; then Milner should be nowhere near the club. Cannot believe that has even been suggested.

A fit Khedira would be excellent but he's made of glass.

Danny Ings misses far too many chances. Again; he belongs somewhere like Tottenham or Liverpool. Teams beneath us in every aspect.

Konoplyanka kind of reminds me of Hazard the way he plays. Would he settle though? Rebrov, Shevchenko, Pavlywhatever his name was, all struggled here.

I was just about to say I thought De Jong looked pretty good last night during the little I watched of Milan vs Roma.

He has that aggressive, tenacious style I like. I understand the point about the youth. I would have liked Chalobah in there, but it doesn't look likely to happen anytime soon. As for Ake, I always feel he might make the central midfield a little light-weight. Not very tall or physically imposing. Hence the reason I could undertand not using him when Matic and Mikel were both out, despite him being a natural DM.

Could you imagine a midfield of Ake, Fabregas and Oscar. Would get eaten alive by some of the thuggish teams we've faced. The team has been bullied quite a bit this season as it is.

My thoughts:

Ranocchia: Good god no. He's like the anti-Terry; struggles under pressure, not a natural leader and is prone to concentration lapses.

Khedira: I'd pass based on his injury history.

Yacob: No thanks. A red-card risk.

Mulumbu: A decent, energetic defensive midfielder but better than Mikel? IMO no. I'd also take De Jong over him, no questions asked.

De Jong: A bit limited, but an excellent midfield destroyer despite playing for a crappy Milan side. Would be a good defensive midfield backup for Matic.

Milner: Extremely versatile; I would prefer him as a B2B over Ramires in all honesty. He's also been one of Man City's better players this season. He might be put off by limited playing time though.

Konoplyanka: Good LW backup for Hazard and one of the Ukrainian Premier League's best players alongside Yarmolenko, but adaptation to the PL has always been problematic for Ukrainian players. We would probably need to sign a compatriot to help him settle.

Luiz Adriano/Ings: Both are a bit overhyped, but I would take either as a third-choice striker if necessary. Whether they're suitable for that role is less clear.

  • 2 weeks later...

Having a look at the list, Ive picked out a few:

Dzsudzsak:  He's actually a quality player, better than the Ukranian chap.

Milner: British, Versatile, Would be a good squad player.

Romero: We need a backup keeper, he's pretty good for that.

Dani Alves: His wages make him a no, but his attacking prowess makes him a yes

I doubt we'll be picking up many foreign players just to fill out squad roles, any foreign players will be to make a proper impact in the first team while we'll try fill it out with homegrown talent/youth team.
