Why Patrick Bamford Must Be Our Loan Star No Longer

Featured Replies

Bamford reminds me of Dixon in so many ways....

I've said exactly that too.

And as much as Kerry was a great player and is a hero to many, you have to ask would he be deemed good enough to get in the Chelsea side of today?

Bamford doesn't get into the England U21 side either. Kane, Ings, Berahino, Ince (before he quit), where all played infront of him and Pritchard is too now. There's no guarantees that he'll even go to the Championships in the summer.

Mourinho has also never mentioned him, although he's mentioned that Solanke, Brown and RLC will not need to go out on loan anywhere, they'll just become first team players. It's very obvious that he doesn't fancy Bamford at all

He seemed to at the start of the season, he was talking about Bamford being 3rd choiec until we signed Drogba.

But every time he's been asked about him recently he's basically refused to comment on him, which is odd.

He hasn't gotten in because those strikers are all current Premier League strikers. As soon as he scored a few in the Prem he'll be in the under 21 squad.

Mourinho has never mentioned him? What the hell are you talking about he's talked about him plenty of times. Honestly are you just here to troll or do you always talk crap about stuff you have no idea about?

Jose has spoken over the weekend…

“Maybe he [Ruben Loftus-Cheek] will end up being better than anyone I buy and, if that is the case, he’ll play and the one I buy won’t.”

Also, on the related matter of last week’s £4.5m signing of Nathan de Sousa from Atletico Paranaense:-

“Nathan will not be in Chelsea’s squad next year, simple as that. You buy in very good circumstances before the price goes to the moon. You develop the player. He belongs to you, is on loan, and in the right moment you bring him back.”

Whilst this may not be the exact inference that Jose had in mind (for media consumption) but I interpret his words to mean that Ruben is an exception to the Academy/Loan/Return [to first team squad] route that is, in effect, the three-step strategy being discussed in this topic. His focus on this occasion, when talking about both players, is on the financial side of things, but it is clear that the club’s loaning out of players is an important step in the overall process and the last but one to be made in the completion of it, unless, of course, you are a player of Loftus-Cheek‘s exceptional ability.

And, naturally, I am really pleased to hear those final words ’…and in the right moment you bring him back.’ because we’ve not really seen evidence of this so far and if ever there was a ’right moment’ for Patrick Bamford surely it is after two loan out spells and a bagful of goals. If not, then what else does the lad have to do to get back - when will be the right moment for him, let alone the rest of the loanees?

.

The question is whether his style of play right now fits our system and what's best for his development.

There's also the question of Solanke's development who is regarded higher than Bamford was when he was here. He needs minutes in the first team alongside playing in the under 21s.

Think last night made my mind up and we should keep Bamford here for next season and look to use him as much as we can. It is time to show a bit of faith in these youngsters. I think the time to send players out on loan is when they're 18 - 20. I know it's not the same for all players but look at Kane at Spurs and the guy who caused us problems last night - Berahino. Both the same age as Bamford. They have done their loans and now they are taking their chance and are at the next level. And that's what it's all about - Taking Your Chance. Ideally he would come on off the bench for Costa with 30 minutes to go when we are 2-0 up and impress and score and it would snowball from there. If he doesn't take his chances, he get's moved on but at least we've given it a go.

Mikel comes of the bench when we are 2-0 up, stop messing with the way of things

Hasn't that become 1-0 up?!!

I think you've got a point about Berahino and Kane, but (and it's a big but) Berahino has played 2840 minutes in the league and Kane has played 2497 minutes.

Bamford won't get that. If you gave him every league minute Drogba and Remy played (in a season where Costa was injured a fair amount) you're still talking about 1500 minutes. That's not to be sniffed at, but I think everyone expects us to sign a better second striker so how many minutes does Bamford get?

Now at Boro he's much more likely to get 2000+ minutes in a team he knows, under a manager he knows and with players he knows.

And if he's not playing then he needs to stay match-fit, so that's under-21 minutes. But Solanke needs those minutes too, because Abraham will almost certainly be the number one striker in the under-18s (although there is obviously crossover). It's a tricky situation.

My opinion. Loan Bamford to Boro if they get promoted, if not reassess and hopefully he goes somewhere else in the PL, make Solanke 3rd choice and sign a new 2nd choice.

This 100%

Although if solanke is to become 3rd choice, I think we need a better 2nd choice than remy, someone that could actually push costa. I don't greizmann would be that player, as although he can fill in as a striker in a pinch, he would be better in a 2 man attack or on the wing. lacazette would probably be my choice.

Both great picks because they can be used on the wing too.

I always thought Lacazette was bigger but he's only 5'9". I reckon that might put Jose off.

Lacazette is pretty stocky though, and he's played up top on his own a fair bit aswell. I think he would be an aguero type of forward.

Can't think of too many 5'9" strikers that Mourinho has bought though, maybe eto'o?

I always thought Remy was a shorter guy, but he's 6'1". I agree that Lacazette has the body where he could do well though.

A lot will depend on what happens to Boro. If they go up I am pretty sure they'll keep Bamford for another season and hopefully that's the case.

As someone who now lives fairly close to Carrow Road, I hope that's NOT the case - On The Ball City!!

Then he can come back to Stamford Bridge next season.

I don't think a loan to a team (probably) fighting relegation would be a good move, personally I would like to see him move on to a mid table premier league side. does anyone else agree?

Why wouldn't it? Gaining experience in a relegation battle can do wonders for a player. They then learn how to play under pressure.

I think for a forward to be playing in a team that isn't going to be creating many chances wouldn't be very beneficial for the forwards development - I might be proved wrong and he might score 10-15 goals at Boro but I feel like the natural progression for his career now should be away from a team that's likely to be scrapping for relegation

I get your point but sometimes relegated teams don't struggle to create goals it's keeping them out at the other the end
