Jim Morrison

Featured Replies

So after a family (heated) debate it has been decided that Jim Morrison is a polorising character in Music. While I appreciate his influence and some Doors songs I feel he overrated. One of my wife's cousins went as far as say he's the best front man ever. Thoughts?

I love him.  Love his voice, love his stage presence and, yes, I love his looks too!   Shame he was dead by the time I discovered him!  I've never thought of him as particularly polarising - but then tell me someone that everyone likes.  I don't think anyone exists.

Now if you want to know someone who is overrated....... I give you Morrisey.

Love Morrisey's music, but not his cantankerous nature. He's currently very ill I believe. No one could ever forget the tree in the pocket.

Love Morrison even more, but folk are elevated, idealised in death sometimes.

Morrisey is a tit and I can't stand his horrible whiny voice.  I particularly dislike Heaven knows I'm miserable now, just shut up you miserable sod.

Riders on the Storm is probably my favourite single ever.  And I remember how amazed my son was to hear Light My Fire having only heard Will Young's version!

Love Roadhouse Blues by the Doors. Only have one Doors album ( I really should have more) and that is Alive She Cried. A while since I've played it so should be play it again. Has superb versions of Gloria and Little Red Rooster.

Ha I feel old knowing Morrison's fire first. Also listen to Jose Feliciano's version!

Yeah I know Jose's version as well - but nowhere near as good as the Doors!

Bottom line is the Doors were a band with one good album in them, who then used Morrison to create a certain sort of notoriety to keep themselves in the spotlight.  If Morrison hadn't of died, they would have faded off to the cabaret circuit, doing Riders, Light My Fire and Roadhouse to old crowds who were just waiting for the bingo to start, sounding more and more like a bad pub-band version of themselves.

Freddie is, in my humble opinion, the greatest frontman of all time.

The Doors had a few great tracks but there were more consistent and influential bands around in their era.

A sh*tty punk band I like called Guttermouth did a song called "What If" which posed the question of if Fred Schneider of the B52's had replaced Jim Morrison in The Doors.

Makes me laugh anyway.

Dear God! Yorkley! Did you just write "If Morrison hadn't of died"????????? Hang your head in shame! I have just removed you from my "Potential Paramours" list. You will have to grovel very hard to be put back on it.

I'm moody as we have no tv, still waiting for some chappy to get onto the roof; before anyone suggests it, no I can't.

Edit, and stupid, wrong thread!

^ Bear in mind how minuscule she makes even legends of blues like John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy and Big Walter look on that stage.

Also she barely even needs a mic.

A great line-up. I read somewhere that Leiber and Stoller preferred her version to anyone else's including Presley's..

I was trying to pander to the general level of grammar prevalent amongst our good forum friends.  I thought everyone would feel a tad uncomfortable if confronted with perfect grammar and syntax, so I deliberately insert an obvious gaffe in most posts.  I'm surprised that you, of all people, didn't notice!
