One of our best signings ever! One of Jose's best signings ever, such a shame injuries ruined his career. I think it was a sub appearance against arsenal for his debut, he slotted in perfectly. Haven't seen another player like him since tbh, who would you say is the closest current player in football right now to him? Kante is the best midfielder right now for me, but he doesn't have the size and the power that the Bison had.

Probably Vidal is the closest. Essien was brilliant though one of the best in the world on his day.

Sad how the injuries got to him, he should have been able to give us a decade of top football, he was only fit for what, 3 seasons total?

There's only one Essien, it's pointless to search for a clone you're bound for disappointment.

He was brilliant. Liked for his playing ability and as a person.

Essien was absolute top draw, better than Kante IMO. Essien was a beast not just in the premier league but against Europes best. You can't beat a midfield trio of Maka, Essien and Lampard.

Such a shame the injuries seemed to catch up in the end.

Shame we rarely shoot outside the box anymore; we might see some great goals like this again...I think Matic's in the semi-final was the last long range strike I think.  I used love watching the 'Bison' play...

What made this goal even more special was that it was a late equaliser and kept our unbeaten home record going. If it wasn't for this strike, our unbeaten record would have ended nearly 2 years earlier than it did.

Only Ronny Radfords' goal in the mud for Hereford in the 70's beats Essiens' goal against Arse on my personal all time best strikes list. The two sweetest strikes you could ever wish to see.

 

Probably the most powerful and complete midfielder I've ever seen. The way he overpowers opponents with pure strength and drive is incredible.

We are so unlucky to only have had 3 good seasons out of him, I hate how injuries has completely changed his playing style.

I don't think we will ever see such a powerful midfielder again.
