July 6, 20233 yr Millwall. The Old Den Decent view but too many distractions on the terraces and a constant state of alert and fear Edited July 6, 20233 yr by The Rising Sun Info

The Old Den Decent view but too many distractions on the terraces and a constant state of alert and fear The Den also has some nasty looking yellow (I think) spiked railings around the away end - not to keep the visitors in but to stop the local loons getting at them. The walk back to New Cross Gate station wasn’t much fun either. I was there for our 1-3 win in 89-90 or thereabouts, King Kerry with a hat trick, left, right and a header - the locals were not amused. After the final whistle we were escorted by plod to New Cross Gate, then on to a tube special that did not stop until Victoria. Their ambush teams at the stations up to Whitechapel we well miffed when our train zoomed through the stations non-stop.
July 9, 20233 yr One of the last games played at the old Den in 83- I was working close but can’t remember exactly where on a Saturday morning- cut along story had nothing planned so decided to rock up there; wasn’t all ticket. Got in the CBL end as the players were running out- plonked myself against a crash barrier reading the programme when everyone around me started singing that song “ Let em come, let em come, to the Den” Don’t know the lyrics now and didn’t then so didn’t join in. Geyser next to me says “ Your not Millwall “ Told him I was a neutral just out to watch a game and he was OK. Turned out weirdly we had mutual acquaintances. Tagged around with him briefly after the game- didn’t see anything happen but there was literally thousands of blokes milling around up for it.

Arrived about 10 minutes after kick-off, having almost gone through to the home end along Cold Blow Lane. My mate, who drove us that day, was jumpy enough as it was, not helped by a guy who for some reason came running out of the bushes on that long track that lead up to the away end. "I thought that was it" muttered our driver! Bloody awful place to watch football. I think we had all 3 pens behind the goal and one thing I do remember was towards the end, Micky Greenaway giving the travelling Blues a chorus of 'Zigger Zagger' from the Millwall seats along the side. Needless to say, the locals weren't happy. Lots of bemused looks!
July 13, 20233 yr Hope this wo Hope this works, us at Millwall in 1990, good view of our mob in the away end. Enjoy.

July 15, 20233 yr Vicenza's away end in the 1998 CWC was absolute sh*te. Like something from the 1930's. The Italian police intercepted and searched the Chelsea coaches as they came off the motorway.

Was right in the corner next to Everton fan. Some gobsh*te kept going on about my Aquascutum raincoat- “ You got a string of Rolex watches in there have you cockney. Nylons, anyone need nylons...” The bloke kept going for it...Me: Yeah alright mate. I’m just hear to watch the game..turn it in FFS.. He had an orientatal girlfriend next to him...he wouldn’t shut up “ At least I didn’t have to go to Thailand to get meself a f**king bird” He went absolutely garrity. Stewards carted him off

I was there for that tagged on to a crowd walking down the Old Kent road probably 400 strong with police vans following all the way. Millwall came out near the entrance from a nearby pub and throwing bottles a number decided to run across the four lanes of traffic to have a go. In the ground it was stifling you could hardly get a song out. Dixon was tremendous that day. Could not remember how I got home then though like you say might have been New Cross Gate as we were herded out through the back streets. Recall seeing Peter Nicholas getting into his parked car near the ground too.
August 4, 20232 yr Hope it woks this time ... regards to all who were there ... a hot day as I recall (the weather and the welcome - not)
August 4, 20232 yr Burnden Park was a right sh*t hole. Was funny singing "super market, super market FC" though.
September 1, 20232 yr I have been trying to find this - this picture quality is not good. The blurb says it is us being escorted to the Den; I think it might be us leaving after the match heading to New Cross Gate - happy to be corrected. What a day ...
November 25, 20232 yr Just watching BIG MATCH REVISITED...loads of nostalgia poured over me while watching how fantastic all crowds were back in the 60s 70s...made me go thru in my mind all the home ends we entered.....lots successfully...some halvsie....some not so good....but miss those days so much I had something in my eye......hate today's grounds with a passion...
November 26, 20232 yr Cambridge away, early 80's. We were shunted up onto the roof of the stand. Sh*t game, we nicked it at the death. Pop Robson.

One of the great crushes. Many occasions pre Hillsborough where terraces were severely overcrowded. Lost a shoe during a surge at Grimsby last game of season. Pop Robson by the time he arrived at hours reminded me a bit of Alan Mayes whose been mentioned on here lately ( albeit he was relatively prolific prior) Undersized for a striker- bit of a fox in the box but can’t remember him doing anything particularly well. Just googled him…he moved around a fair bit. Two stints at West Ham and three separate shifts with Sunderland, plus other placements

I walked down the Old Kent Road for that with about 400 other fans followed all the way by police vans and near the ground entrance Millwall fans came about behind a pub on the other side of the road and started throwing bottles, dozens from our side charged across the 4 lanes of traffic as the police dog handlers came out. Don't think the Millwall fans waited and took to their toes. Was a hot day under their terrace and after being kept back after the matched ended were all pushed towards New Cross and saw Peter Nicholas getting into a small parked car close to the ground. Good to see Dixon get the hat-trick.
November 28, 20232 yr Forgot to add Ashton Gate was the worst for me, atrocious weather with no cover and the police seem to like letting their fans have a go at the opposition.

It was third game of season and we were top, typical us we got relegated in the infamous play off v Boro at end of season
