We're signing Havertz and already have Mount/RLC/Barkley/Kovacic/Anjorin.

Plays a different role from Havertz. You could argue he is already better than 4 or even 5 of those listed, and potentially has a higher ceiling than all. Pep is a big fan and City were rumoured to be in for him this summer, Arsenal have made a cash + Guendouzi offer.
At £44m he will be a steal wherever he ends up.

The difference being that the 4 or 5 who he is better than are already here and we seem to be having problems getting players out, we cant splash another 40 odd million plus salary on what would be a luxury player when there clearly are other areas which need addressing.

Barkley is not good enough, Anjorin is nowhere near ready, RLC you'll be lucky to get 5 games a season and Mount is a squad player at best.

Kovacic is the only argument to be made here, but he could play a bit deeper with Aouar and Havertz as the 2 8's

Agree here, the only issue is that I doubt we can afford him without offloading other players. We need to sort out our defensive problems first anyway before we get him, but what a player he would be to have

If we could offload Barkley and Jorginho (and there's definitely a market for those two) we could definitely afford Aouar, who's much younger and better than both.

If we do offload them both, we will need to use the funds to sort out the defensive woes first.

Aouar and Benrahma are quite low priority atm (despite both being great and suitable players to have)

I wasn't suggesting that this should happen at the expense of improving our defence which is our most problematic area. I just mentioned Aouar because players of such quality don't become available often and we seem to have money to spend due to not spending for a full year, Willian and Pedro being removed from the wage bill, CL money coming in, other clubs suffering from post Covid financial restraints, UEFA temporarily relaxing FFP guidelines and Roman seemingly willing to spend big for the first time in years. If we could sell Bakayoko and Emerson to Serie A and find takers for Batshuayi we may clear close to 55-60m and that alone (plus wages saved) could land us a top CB.

My thoughts exactly, we can definitely use a player of his quality but first we need to offload some of our current crop. I doubt we'll get him this year, but I'm hoping he stays put at Lyon for another year so we can sign him next summer.

They'd both play as an 8 for Lampard.

This isn't fifa, we can't make 10 signings each window and several other positions are far more important (CB/LB/GK). The fact you claim Mount is a squad player is laughable too. One of our most important players last season.

I didn't say we need 10 signings each window? I said we need to prioritise the defence first and then if we have budget left over we can try go for the likes of Benrahma or Aouar

We've already spend £85m, about to double that with Havertz. Defence is going to likely cost about £150m minimum with the players we're linked with. There'll be no more money.

Yeah but we’ve already signed 3, with Havertz coming in too. Looks like we may get a LB and a GK, a CB I’m not sure.

Thats already 6 players, hard to see us signing more players after that, especially someone like Aouar.

Im not talking about making all the signings in this 1 window. To do a full squad rebuild it will take at least 2-3 windows and I don't expect us to bring any more attack minded players in this windows after Havertz.

I dont mean this window, I mean the next one in which we can strengthen. But yes as for now we need our defence sorted

You don't know how much money we can spend any more than other posters do. Plus, there are still money to be earned through sales, loans etc and FFP demands will be less severe, so it really comes down to how much Roman is willing to contribute.

We may need to spend a lot this summer because a year from now the situation may change and we won't have the same advantages over our competition in the transfer market.

Has any team ever spent £400m in a single window? Once the Havertz deal goes through we will have already spent £165m (?) without even touching our defence and gk. I'm not pretending to know what our budget is but i think its pretty safe to point out the obvious.

City maybe? They're probably the only ones that have ever come close anyway.

We won't spend anywhere near that much (net spend anyway), but I think this summer and the following summer will both be pretty big. This one so far isn't even really that big as we've only signed 2 first team signings and our net spend is only a paltry 15 or so million.

Still 'only' £285m in Pep's second year.
