This is how I saw it as well.

It was a decent performance, but we faded late and we were holding on in the end.

Despite the frustrating nature of our season, I do think we're making steady progress under Pochettino.

Having seen the highlights. Backs up what was said in the match thread. You only get a few really good chances to score against a really good side like Villa.

Madueke and Palmer in the first half, then Palmer in the second. 2 saves for Martinez to make from them, and they were easy saves. Petrovic had more difficult things to do.

Oh and was it Badiashile that had thar first half header where he lost his man and then headed it gently to Martinez. Awful header whoever it was.

So, in summary, didn't our chances...

Dull and boring match but good to keep a clean sheet against a good, very well drilled Villa who are challenging for the title. Plus I'd say we were the better side.

I certainly may have fallen asleep as I was on the booze from 5pm.

If there was ever a game that a Manager wanted to give example to the board that we need a competent striker, that was textbook!

Its not even about finding another Drogba or Costa, that is rare, but just someone that is a target man that can bang some in at least!

But its not only Center Forwards job to score goals.  Its all about team, wingers , fullbacks, attacking midfielders , defenders from set pieces ...all should take/have responsibility to score and its not happening.

Except we didn't have a single fully fit fullback for this game and have been missing them all or most for long periods of time. It got to the point that we even lost  Colwill in the warmup who was used as LB despite struggling in that position. It's just ridiculous how unlucky we are with long term injuries this season and especially when it comes to full backs.

Well if, and it is a big IF, we can be the first side to beat Aston Villa at Villa Park in a year then the next opponent in the 5th round would be either Leeds or Plymouth, who also have a replay at the latter.
