September 12, 20241 yr One for Val ... apparently the first Dutch band to reach #1 in the USA ! Most people probably more familiar with the Bananarama cover version, but I think I prefer this original one 🙂 Several hits in their home country, but just this one in the UK and the USA. September 12, 20241 yr From 1979 - The Buggles, Video Killed The Radio Star. Numero Uno in 16 countries, and also the first ever music video aired on MTV as well (on 1 August 1981). Surprisingly only reached #40 in the USA
September 12, 20241 yr The song was banned by the BBC --- Serge Gainsbourg critically acclaimed and controversial scored his only UK chart success with this song

This track is this band's most well known track, in fact is probably there signature track, yet the original never charted in the US or the UK and the re-release only ever got to 57 in the UK charts. For those into the Soul and r&b circuit this is still a stonking track. Yeah, but Maze were not one hit wonders really, were they? they were aMazing 😄 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maze_(band)
September 12, 20241 yr "Woodstock" was written by Joni Mitchell and C,S,N &Y had a version which was an American top 20 hit earlier in 1970. But this by Matthews' Southern Comfort was a one hit wonder in the UK

September 13, 20241 yr Only significant hit in the UK, still on my playlist Still awaiting the most obvious one hit wonder from 1972
September 13, 20241 yr True, Otway had a solo hit but this is him with Wild Willy Barrett. If you haven't been to an Otway concert I recommend you do. His concerts are very different from any other you would have attended or will attend. His cover versions of Blockbuster, You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet etc are wonderful. He is a bit eccentric!

Great song, but Shocking Blue were not a one hit wonder in the Netherlands of course! Check out Mighty Joe and Never Marry a Railroad Man for instance.
