HUTCHINSON RETIRES

Sam Hutchinson has announced his retirement as a professional footballer.

Unfortunately the 21-year-old defender suffered a reoccurrence of the knee injury that affected his past three seasons and it is has been decided he will not recover sufficiently for the physical demands of a professional career.

Hutchinson will continue to be supported by Chelsea Football Club and will work in our Academy while also studying sports science at university. He will later pursue coaching qualifications.

He made his first-team debut as a substitute in the final league game of the 2006/07 season and was part of the first team pre-season visit to the United States that followed. Then-manager José Mourinho spoke about him as a future permanent member of the Chelsea squad.

Comfortable at full-back or in central-defence, Hutchinson was expected to make rapid progress but after just five reserve games in 2007/08, the knee problems began and brought the season to a halt.

Further recovery time was needed in the middle section of 2008/09, limiting Sam to six games for the reserves, a side which he had captained.

He joined Chelsea at the age of nine and developed into an England Under-19 international. He received an England Under 21 call-up but withdrew to manage his injury, a process that looked to be paying dividends when Hutchinson rejoined the first team squad for the pre-season tour of the US in 2009.

Last season he played as a sub against Fulham in August, started against QPR in the Carling Cup, before in April, coming on in the 7-0 home win over Stoke and crossing for Frank Lampard's goal.

In total Hutchinson started one game for Chelsea and made three sub appearances. Chelsea Football Club thanks him for his on-pitch contribution and wishes him well in his future work with the club.

I thought it was a joke when I saw this topic.

It's really sad to see someone that young retire from the game he loves.

But it's great to see that the club will continue supporting him and helping him become something else instead.

I wish Hutchinson the best of luck in the future and hopefully he'll excell in whatever he choses to do as a career. Maybe we'll see him doing great things off the pitch for us in the future.

Devasted but not surprised. Hutch would already have been a regular in the team had it not been for his knee injuries he was that good. A massive loss to the game and it is truly tragic that the talent he had will never be utilised.

Wow, I am so damn disappointed by this and I can see I'm not alone. Like Moos I thought it was a joke when I saw the topic. I had no idea he his injuries were that bad.

God damnit, I really believed this guy was another JT in the making. He had been in the club for so long and seemed to be on the right path. And at 21 he is done. Just doesnt seem fair.

I really hope the club do stick with him and find him a job. To not make it at a top club is one thing, but to have to give up a professional career at all levels so early has got to be a crushing blow.

I know we have other defensive prospects, but this just sucks

God how incredibly awful, I had no idea his injuries problems were this bad. I wish him all the success in the world in his new career path, and hope the club stay true to their word.

Sad news indeed. I, like others had not appreciated the nature and seriousness of his injury. I look forward to watching his progress as a coach. Glad to see the club standing behind one of there own, been here since he was 9.

This is a shame. At least he'll be alright though just not a professional footballers. The headline for the article on facebook made it sound far more ominous.

At least he'll always have that brilliant cross to Lampard against Stoke.

Disappointing for Chelsea and disappointing for the kid because it's just such a random thing. I don't believe in destiny but it's clear that it wasn't in the cards for him to be a professional footballer. What a shame.

Very sad news, had a very bright future ahead of him. Must be devastating. Been at the club since he was 9 years old so he is chelsea through and through. Wish him the best of luck in whatever lies ahead for him in the future.
