If you had to choose, say, a race driver for your race team, and had Michael Schumacher circa 2005 or 2006, Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard ( ) and someone or other to choose from, who would you try first, and who would you try last? Michael Schumacher would not even need to be tested. He's the firm choice, except you wanted to see if there was a chance anyone could perhaps at a given moment do better, so you'd try the others out first. Then on the final test day you let the chosen one have a go and say, yup, he's still the best; the job's his.

Within months of his signing I said of Drogba: "He plays by himself, for himself." Since then he has put in some frankly brilliant performances, some match-winning ones no less, but I can't love him for the way he plays the game. There are a few things that happen when Deidre plays: 1. When he feels he can take the centreback, he stays central. If not he drifts deeper or wider. Not saying it's not a legitimate tactic but isn't that where you need him to 'get stuck in' even more? 2. When a pass is made to him, first touch to receive the ball, second move is a tackle to recover the ball. 3. Runs with ball, and presented with passing options, usually opts to try and beat his man with dribbling or tricks, which usually then results in loss of possession. He is not a dribbler. Don't tell me you want to criticise Maka for trying final passes but not Deidre for his dribbling attempts. Sometimes what he tries comes off the way it did in his head, and everyone claps. Really, his technical proficiency, or lack of it makes me think that is the exception rather than the rule. 4. His Bambi impersonations. Does he have a brain? Does he use it? Even his teammates aren't bothered nowadays when he falls, much less the ref or opposition. He must have some other higher level purpose when he does it then. Another thing that has happened many times which irritates me: when a teammate is in a position to either shoot or pass, Deidre will make a run hoping the final pass is for him. If a shot is taken or the pass is for another player, he simply stops running. He just STOPS. Yes, if I played for the team I'd do that as well. Not bothered in the slightest if he leaves, which I hope he does. To quote a line in the game GTA San Andreas: "I appreciate your input, but please, f*ck off."
